RHS building trades class to build house for Habitat for Humanity
The project kicked off Tuesday afternoon with a ceremonial groundbreaking at 638 Thayer Street where the home will be located.
"This is the beginning of our 24th build for Habitat for Humanity," said Dave Havel, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Northwoods. "We're just so excited this year because we have a collaboration with the Rhinelander High School building trades class led by Wil Losch, the teacher, and all these kids that are going to be building our house for us. We're ready to start and we've got the whole school year to complete this house here in Rhinelander."
Losch said the collaboration represents a renewal of sorts, as the building trades class built a Habitat house a few years ago. The main difference is that house was built behind the high school and later moved to its final location while this project will be completed on-site, he explained.
"We really hope this becomes an annual partnership building on-site," Losch said. "We want to get back to building on-site and Habitat is a perfect partner."
Losch said the students will begin work after the foundation is in place and will be partnering with plumbers and electricians as the process moves forward.
"The goal is to have a house close to finished by the end of May for a family to move in," he added, noting that the group's first project is a small shed under construction near the softball complex. "That'll be our warm-up for a couple weeks while they get the foundation in," he said.
Senior Braden Mork is one of the students who will be building the house.
"I think it's awesome," he said. "We get to learn as students and we get to give back to the community, It's going to be a cool thing, I think. I mean right now, we have tons of people coming to Rhinelander and no houses really for them to go to. So it's cool that we're going to give at least one family a house."
Mork said he chose to take the class as an elective because he's interested in the building trades as a possible career.
"I think it's super cool and it's fun doing stuff hands-on," he said.
