Gregory M. Jackson

Gregory M. Jackson
Gregory M. Jackson

Usually known for his quick wit, Gregory M. Jackson was a master of letter writing, had a gentle spirit and a fondness for his family and friends. He had a competitive nature. The story is he had whistling contests as a kid. He looked up to his brother, Curtis, who was always on an adventure and loved his big sister, Deborah. Dad was his go-to for advice, always enjoying their breakfasts together. He was born on his mother's birthday. Mom referred to him as "my Gregory".

Gregory was 61 years old when he passed away suddenly from a stroke at his home in Rhinelander on Aug. 30, 2022. Born Sept. 2, 1960, in Lake Forest, Ill., Gregory was the son of Barbara W. and the late Roger W. Jackson.

Growing up Gregory was a born leader, always interested in everything and everybody. He was a tuba player in the Glenbrook South high school band and marched in the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. In the Orange Bowl parade, he marched with crutches and his picture was picked up and published in the newspapers worldwide.

In his late 20s, he moved to Rhinelander. He became president of the board of the Get-To-Gether Drop-In Center. He was a volunteer fireman for the Pine Lake Township and worked in maintenance for Zion Lutheran Church. He was a wonderful dad to a Jack Russell Terrier named Freddy and has been a member of NAMI and the Northern Lakes Drop-In for many years. He spent his free time kayaking with Freddy. He loved his early morning coffee with friends at the local McDonald's and hanging out at the lake with his friend, Colleen.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara W. Jackson of Tomahawk, father, the late Roger W. Jackson of Tomahawk; sister, Deborah Jackson Moss (Laura), of Evanston, Ill.; brother, Curtis W. Jackson, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; aunt Charlene Weir and uncle Lee Weir of Surprise, Ariz. and cousins; special friend, Colleen Huntington.

The funeral service for Gregory will be held at St. Mark Lutheran Church 21 S. Baird Avenue, Rhinelander on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, at 11 a.m. The visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A funeral luncheon will follow in the church hall.

The service will be streamed on the church website, www.stmarkrhinelander.org. To honor Gregory, donate to NAMI of the Northern Lakes: Attention: Drop In Center (naminorthernlakes.org).

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501, 715-365-4343. Everyone is invited to sign the guestbook or leave an online condolence at www.hildebrandrussfh.com
