The James Williams Middle School girls' swim team won five events Oct. 8 and took first place in the 12-team Wisconsin Valley Conference middle school meet held at Horace Mann Middle School in Wausau.
The event was comprised of a mix of programs that compete in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and the Great Northern Conference at the high school level.
Vivian Lamers and Kiley Pooch finished 1-2 for the Hodags in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 50 backstroke, with Lamers claiming the win in both events (26.25, 31.17). Rhinelander also went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke with Ella Heck (32.52) edging teammate June Chiamulera for the win.
Lamers, Heck, Rylee Mickevicius and Chiamulera swam to 10-second win in the 200 medley relay (2:01.01). Heck, Pooch, Chiamulera and Lamers rolled in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.14), winning that event by nearly 13 seconds.
Chiamulera also scored a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle while the Hodags took second with their 400 freestyle relay team of Mickevicius, Sam Sherwood, Lola Beech and Pooch. Mickevicius was third in the 100 individual medley and fourth in the 50 butterfly while Heck finished third in the 50 butterfly.
The Hodags scored 386 points at the meet, finishing ahead of runner-up John Muir (Wausau West) Middle School by 124 points. Medford was the highest-placing GNC-affiliated school behind JWMS in sixth.
JWMS runners take 5th at WVC meet
The James Williams Middle School cross country team closed out its 2022 season by finishing fifth out of 11 teams in both the boys' and girls' divisions of the Wisconsin Valley Conference meet last Tuesday in the Stevens Point area.
Avrom Barr led the Hodag boys in fifth overall, covering 3.2 kilometers in 11 minutes, 37 seconds. Jackson Weinzatl finished 13th, Henry Schmitz was 19th, Michael Tredupp was 46th, Austen Slette finished 84th, Chasin Wallmow was 111th and Wyatt Crowell was 124th to round out Rhinelander's top seven.
Teagan Clark paced the Hodag girls in 13th (13:47). Ella Miljevich was 19th, Lucy Eddy placed 26th, Aleece Johnson was 28th, Hayley Schiek was 29th, Karly Gillingham finished 108th and Kaleiha Glebke was 121st to round out the team's top seven.
