In July of 2003 he started his own agency, Benefit Design Associates in DePere, which he owned and operated until the time of his death. He married the former Margaret "Peg" Nagan on May 20, 1989, in DePere, and they were blessed with 33 years of marriage.

He loved everything about the outdoors which included golfing, fishing, skiing and grouse hunting and he was a longtime member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. He pitched fast-pitch softball for many years and he enjoyed playing pool with family and friends.
