The Holmboe Conifer Forest State Natural Area in Rhinelander was formally inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network Thursday morning, Oct. 6, 2022, through presentation of a plaque to the Northwoods Land Trust, which manages the 32-acre property. Pictured, from left to right, are naturalist and author John Bates, Nick Sanchez, Midwest regional manager for the Old-Growth Forest Network; Northwoods Land Trust board member Ron Eckstein and Ted Anchor, executive director of the Northwoods Land Trust. According to a press release announcing the honor, OGFN's program identifies significant areas to connect people to the extraordinary ecological and human wellness benefits of old-growth forests. The Holmboe is the fourth Wisconsin forest to join the Old-Growth Forest Network and the first in Oneida County. The Northwoods Land Trust has cared for the property since 2007 when the Holmboe family decided to transfer ownership as a way to ensure conservation. During the plaque ceremony, Sanchez noted that the Holmboe is in the homelands of the Anishinabe people. It features mature stands of hemlock, pine and white cedar on glacial ridges and in lowland swamps and has many natural springs that flow into the Pelican River, near the confluence of the Wisconsin River.
