She was born on Dec. 14, 1926, in Brent, Alabama, to Ottie Wells and Luna Adeal (Fulford) Whaley and met her husband Joe Finis Peek in Humboldt, Tenn. where she was a dental assistant. They moved to Rhinelander with their two small sons in 1955 and after Joe Sr. retired, they became "snowbirds" and spent their winters in Florida and later in Humboldt.
When her children were growing up, she served as a Cub Scout Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and Teacher's Aid/Tutor. Later she was active with volunteering with the card ministry and food pantry. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, not only for the spiritual meaning but also for the joy it gave her to decorate the house, display her lighted Christmas village and sing in the church choir. She was always cheerful and knew no strangers. As a small child her mother often told her, "When you come in this kitchen you bring all the sunshine I need."
She is survived by sons, Joe Jr. of Rhinelander, and Michael Peek (Heather) of Fort Myers, Florida; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joe Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Rhinelander First United Methodist Church, 724 Arbutus Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501.
There will be a private celebration of life at a later date.
