The James Williams Middle School girls' track team won the Wisconsin Valley Conference Small School middle school track meet while the JWMS boys finished second last Tuesday in a meet conducted at Mike Webster Stadium.

The WVC Small meet was, essentially, a future Great Northern Conference meet - as the middle schools for six of the seven conference programs were represented, along with two of the K-8 districts that feed into the Lakeland Union High School district.

JWMS edged Mosinee 142-129 for the girls' title while the Hodags boys finished second behind Mosinee.

The Hodag girls won seven of the 17 events, including the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. Eighth-grader Aila Bergman took the 200-meter dash (28.51) and the triple jump (25 feet, 11 inches) for the Hodags, while placing second in both the 100 and 200 hurdles.

Seventh-grader Lucy Eddy won the 400-meter dash with a time (1:04.04) that would have placed second in the WIAA Division 1 girls' high school regional at Wausau West a day prior. Eighth-grader Libbey Buchmann took the discus (94-7) and finished second in the shot put.

The JWMS girls also had third-place finishes from Alecce Johnson in the 800, Olivia Ruetz in the high jump and Karly Gillingham in the long jump.

The Hodag boys won the 4x100 relay, eighth-grader Connor Dumpprope won the 200 hurdles (30.51) and eighth-grader Miles Eagleson took the triple jump (37-5 1/2).

Eighth-grader Ben Olson was runner-up in the 100 and the 200, the Hodags took second in the 4x400 relay and JWMS finished two-three-four in the discus with Abe Gretzinger, Eric Parish and Travis Trickey.

Rhinelander High School track coach Aaron Kraemer said he is excited to welcome some of these athletes to the high school track program next year.

"There are pieces in place for next year and it makes you excited as a coach to be ready to reload," he said. "You look at what's going in at the middle school with their eighth-grade class, just like this freshman class, there are pieces that fit right in to the puzzle next year. The state of our team looks pretty strong."
