According to a press release announcing her campaign, Daniel was motivated to run for state Assembly after hearing others express frustration with the incumbent's "lack of initiative."
Swearingen, a Rhinelander Republican, has held the office since January of 2013.
"Along with a career in media and marketing, Ms. Daniel has also held leadership roles in a number of community and school non-profit organizations. These experiences, along with her time on city council, have given her the opportunity to talk to and work with people who consistently express frustration with the lack of initiative taken by the current representative," her campaign announcement reads. "The issues she's observed and discussed with her diverse network of small business owners, area leaders, parents, teachers, professionals, and young adults, have inspired her to seek this position in the Wisconsin Assembly."
According to the announcement, Daniel has lived all over the country but "found home" when she moved to Rhinelander 18 years ago.
"She has embraced the hard-working values of the Northwoods and raised her three children here," the statement reads. "She understands the importance of clean water, strong public schools, and a solid economy. If elected, Eileen is not afraid to put in the hard work and long hours to get results. 'Someone once told me that if you want to get something done, ask a busy person,' she said. 'I guess that's why people have no problem asking me for help when they need it. They know I'll do everything I can to get it done.'"
Notably, Daniel's campaign announcement includes no reference to political party affiliation. As a result, the River News asked Daniel to clarify whether she is a member of a political party or is running as an independent candidate. She later responded that she is running as a Democrat.
Daniel represents District 7, which includes city wards 9 and 12. In April 2020, she defeated former alderman Bill Freudenberg for the seat, which was previously held by Steve Sauer. Sauer did not run for re-election in 2020, after eight years on the council.
Last month, during the panel's reorganizational meeting, she was elected president of the council.
The partisan primary is scheduled for Aug. 9. The general election is Nov. 8.
