Allan Alexander Johnson, age 83, of Rhinelander, passed away at his home on Friday morning, May 20, 2022, with his family at his side and under the care of Compassus Home Hospice. He was born on Sept. 10, 1938, in Iron River, Michigan to Ocey and Helmi Johnson. He grew up in Crystal Falls, Mich. and graduated from Crystal Falls High School in 1956.

Al attended Michigan Tech University where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1961. He worked for the Michigan Highway Department for a short time, building interstate highway bridges before earning his Master of Business Administration from Michigan Tech in 1966.

Allan began his career with the U.S. Forest Service in Bessemer, Mich. From there he went on to work in Medford, Ore., Park Falls, and finally in Rhinelander, where he retired in 1994. During his career, Al designed and oversaw construction of numerous roads, camps, and foot bridges in our national forests.

On January 27, 1968, he married Dorothy L. Jewett of Newaygo, Mich. They were happily married for 54 years. A lifelong outdoorsman, Allan was passionate about camping, hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, snowmobiling, and motorcycling. Always creative, Allan once built a 17-foot boat in his apartment living room. He also took flying lessons, eventually completing his solo flight. Allan was an avid Green Bay Packer-backer. A consummate family man, he and his family spent many weekends camping and enjoying the outdoors. Proud of his Finnish heritage, his favorite trip was to Finland where he visited relatives. He was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church and enjoyed activities at the YMCA of the Northwoods.

Allan is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Rhinelander, his son, David (Christine) Johnson of Rapids City, South Dakota; David's son, Connor and Christine's daughter, Noaa; daughter, Michelle (Michael) Gilbert and their children, Matthew, Stephen and Julia of Beaumont, Texas. Also surviving are other relatives and friends.

The visitation for Allan will take place on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at 125 E. King Street, from 10 a.m. until the 12 p.m. (noon) Memorial Mass. Fr. Chris Kemp will be officiate.

Immediately following the memorial mass there will be a procession to Northland Memorial Park for the Committal Service.

Following the cemetery service, the Johnson family cordially invites everyone to join them at a luncheon in the banquet room at Hildebrand Funeral Home.
