Judy was highly creative, enjoying dance, music, knitting, sewing, and visual art. She lived her life like the collages she created; pulling toward her anything she enjoyed, knowing somehow it would fit. For her the arts were about community and connection. She and Tom were leaders in the Northwoods square dance community, both as dancers and callers with the Hodag Twirlers. Judy also enjoyed belly dancing, performing at elder facilities, schools, and even for patients in the hospital. Judy loved playing flute and used it as a way to connect with others. Prior to her death she played her flute daily for the other residents at Milestones Senior Living.
Education was another passion. Judy became a teacher of almost everything she enjoyed. She taught knitting and line dancing for Nicolet College. Resorts hired her to provide one-night dance entertainment. She could teach anyone how to dance once she got them on the floor! Teaching basic math skills at Blackwell Job Corps Center in Laona was the job that gave her the most satisfaction. Integrating math and art, she created a cartoon math book to help students who were struggling with key concepts.
She was proud of her children's educational achievements: Steven's Evans Scholarship to UW-Madison and Heather's Doctorate in Art Therapy. Judy enjoyed being in nature, especially on the family's wooded property. The whole family gardened, made maple syrup, spent time in the woods, and swam and canoed nearby lakes. She was a leader for Heather's Girl Scout troop, which gave her opportunities to camp. And she spent time on the golf course with Tom and Steve. Judy also treasured friendships and gave much of her time to helping others. She valued elders and enjoyed visiting with them in their homes. She was passionate about promoting social justice and educated others locally about important national issues.
Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lorraine Berg, and her husband Tom Hogan. She is survived by her daughter, Heather Leigh of Milwaukee, son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Ember Hogan of Apex, N.C., and her sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Jim Dummert of Brookfield.
A Celebration of Life will be held for both Judy and Tom Hogan at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at The First United Methodist Church in Rhinelander. Donations can be given to the Judy Hogan Arts and Social Justice Fund of The First United Methodist Church of Rhinelander.
