Complaint outlines allegations against MMA fighter
By River News Staff-
Frank R. Schuman, 29, made an appearance in Oneida County Circuit Court Monday afternoon at which time he told circuit judge Mike Bloom that the state public defender's office had yet to find an attorney to represent him.
Hearing that, Bloom scheduled another adjourned initial appearance for 1:15 p.m. Friday, May 20 but noted a hearing could be scheduled earlier than that if Schuman retains an attorney.
When Schuman asked if the court would revisit the $10,000 cash bail set in his case, Bloom answered that bond can be considered after Schuman is represented by counsel.
According to the criminal complaint, Schuman is accused of pressing a loaded gun into a woman's back and placing the weapon in her mouth. The complaint further alleges Schuman slammed the same woman's head against a car window on two occasions and knocked her out using the butt of a gun on another occasion.
Schuman, who is a mixed martial arts fighter, was sentenced to 8 months in jail in June 2018 after standing trial in Vilas County Circuit Court on several charges related to domestic abuse. The jury convicted him of three misdemeanors but acquitted him on eight felony charges, according to court records.
In that case, he was accused of strangling, kicking and punching a woman as well as threatening her with an AR-15.
The Oneida County sheriff's office issued a press release Friday afternoon, May 13, requesting the public's assistance in obtaining information about "criminal incidents" involving Schuman.
According to the release, an investigation is underway involving "incidents where Schuman has committed violent acts against women."
"If anyone has information about Schuman's involvement in these types of incidents or has had contact with victims of these incidents, we ask that you assist law enforcement in protecting the women of our community by contacting law enforcement at 715-361-5201," the release said.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation and other northern law enforcement agencies are also involved in the investigation, according to the release.
In addition to the three felonies, (substantial battery, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and false imprisonment), Schuman is also charged with six misdemeanor counts related to alleged domestic abuse, according to a criminal complaint filed May 11.
He faces a maximum of 22 years in prison if convicted on the three felony counts.
