The Hodags shot 351 but had to settle for fifth place in what turned into the fifth leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Minocqua after Thursday's play at Eagle River Golf Course was wiped out due to thunderstorms.
There was not a ton of separation between Rhinelander's players Friday, with only seven strokes separating the Hodags' lowest score from their highest. Yet that was not quite good enough as Rhinelander finished six strokes behind Antigo for third and two behind Mosinee for fourth in the team's lowest finish in conference play this season.
"Everybody else had a really good day except for us," coach Adam Schmidt said. "We really didn't play that great, just shot mid-80s. It was good, I guess, bogey golf, but it seemed like there was a lot of hitting it in the rough and then chipping out. (Hit) in the woods and had to chip out, missed a green here, missed a green there. The shots just didn't fall our way."
Friday marked the first time this season that Rhinelander did not have anyone finish in the top 10 in conference play. Freshman Brody Kowieski had a chance to do so, but a triple bogey on his final hole of the day, the par-4 first hole, dropped him to a round of 85 and two strokes outside the top 10.
Koldyn Gechas also just missed the top 10, placing 12th with an 86 after a double bogey-bogey finish to his round. Garrett Kulhanek shot 89, Andrew Henrichs had a 91 and Cal Laggis shot 92.
"Kole said he felt he really didn't play that bad. He just had a lot of shots that didn't go his way, putts that didn't drop," Schmidt said. "He kind of hopped on a bogey train, made a bunch of bogeys. Garrett, it was kind of the same thing. He had some big number holes. Brody tripled his last hole. It was just kind of a rough day."
Lakeland shot a blistering 7-over 295 as a team on its home course to win the fifth leg of the conference tournament by 36 strokes over Medford. Rhinelander maintained third spot in the overall conference standings, four points ahead of Antigo with two rounds to play.
Gechas dropped one spot to ninth in the GNC individual standings after finishing outside the points on Friday. Kowieski fell to 11th while Kulhanek and Henrichs now both sit outside of all-conference position, in 17th and 19th, respectively, in the standings.
Lakeland's Jack Rubo finished with a 1-under par round of 71 to take medalist honors Friday, two strokes ahead of teammate Kaeden Nomm, who maintained his lead in the conference individual race. Lakeland now has the top four golfers in the individual standings following Friday's play.
Rhinelander was set to have another go at Eagle River Golf Course on Monday as the GNC made up the conference match hosted by Northland Pines. It will be a complete restart, nullifying Thursday's scores as the players got in only a handful of holes before thunderstorms canceled play for the afternoon.
Laggis was 1-over through two holes when play ways stopped, Kowieski and Gechas were both at plus-2, Kulhanek was plus-3 and Henrichs was already 7-over through 4 holes.
"The kids said it was nice that they get to plays those holes over again so they hopefully do a little better this time," Schmidt said.
Rhinelander closes out the conference tournament today at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook.
