Joel attended Rhinelander High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960, and served during the Bay of Pigs invasion as an engineer on the destroyer USS Rich. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Rhinelander, and attended Nicolet College earning a degree in art. Joel was employed at Marplex, where he served as their first union president. He then worked at Rhinelander Paper Company until his retirement in 1998.
Joel married Cheryl Wiedeman in 1968, and they celebrated 54 wonderful years together. They enjoyed many trips out West and time spent at their summer home in Algoma. He loved to take back roads all over the state where he'd find the best aged cheddar and sausage sticks. He truly was one of the first back road pickers. He was a wheeler and dealer who collected everything from trinkets to cars.
Joel is survived by his wife, Cheryl; sons, Joel Sandberg Jr. (Theresa Nordquist) and Chadd Sandberg; grandchildren, Grace Nordquist and Cami Sandberg; brothers, Dennis "Sandy" Sandberg and Kim (Ramona) Sandberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Terry Sandberg; brothers, Gary "Butch" Sandberg and Larry "Rowdy" Sandberg; and grandson, Jonathan Ottman.
