The Hodags finished third again on Tuesday in the third leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament at Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk.
It was Rhinelander's fourth straight third-place finish to start the season, as the Hodags edged Antigo by a stroke for the third spot on Tuesday. The Hodags had their lowest score of the season as well - fittingly a 333.
"We keep beating Antigo by one, that's pretty awesome," Rhinelander coach Adam Schmidt said. "On the driving range, they were all hitting the ball really well. That was pretty exciting."
Senior Koldyn Gechas led Rhinelander on Tuesday, tying for seventh overall with an 11-over-par round of 79 on Inshalla's quirky par-68 layout.
Starting on the 16th hole, Gechas played his first nine holes in 10-over before turning it on coming in. He had birdies on the par-4 ninth and par-3 12th holes as he played his final nine holes in 37 strokes.
"Kole played good, shot 79. That was very exciting. I watched Kole on No. 9 and he made a 15-footer for birdie, that was pretty exciting," Schmidt said.
Senior Garrett Kulhanek shot 80 to finish in a tie for 10th on the day. After making a triple bogey on the par-5 10th hole, Kulhanek played his final five holes in 1-under, including a birdie on the par-4 13th hole, to earn a share of the final conference point.
Brody Kowieski shot 82, with matching 41s on each of Inshalla's nines to finish 13th on the day. Andrew Henrichs shot 92 to finish in 23rd.
"The boys, they were talking about how yesterday at practice we did a lot of putting and chipping and they putted really well as a whole," Schmidt noted. "They said they chipped really well too. Andrew chipped very well. He had a lot of one-putts."
Cal Laggis finished with a 109 on the day, following a rough start that included an eight on his opening hole of the day, the par-3 12th hole, and a 13 on the 15th hole. Schmidt said he applauded Laggis' fight following a difficult start.
"His back nine he shot 46. To piece it back together again and to be able to let it go, say that's not going to affect me, that nine didn't define him. That was really good to see that he didn't let that ruin his day," Schmidt said.
Lakeland won its third straight conference meet with a score of 302 as senior Kaeden Nomm took medalist honors with a 1-over round of 69.
Rhinelander sits in third in the team standings following three conference meets, six points behind Lakeland and three points behind Medford, which has been the runner-up in each of the first three conference stops.
Kowieski is still the highest-ranked Hodag in the GNC individual standings, sitting in ninth place overall on the strength of his third-place tie April 28 in Medford. Gechas remained in 10th place following Tuesday's play, Kulhanek moved into a tie for 14th with his first conference points of the season and Henrichs dropped to a tie for 16th, just outside of all-conference consideration.
The league was initially scheduled to go to Eagle River Golf Course on Thursday for the fourth leg of the GNC tournament, but that event has been pushed back one more week to May 12 as Eagle River is still preparing for its opening day. Rhinelander will now host the fourth leg of the GNC tournament this Tuesday at Northwood Golf Club, which opened for play Wednesday.
The Hodags traveled to Green Lake for an invite Wednesday morning on the Links Course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in a match that concluded after press time. The team will return to action Saturday in the Merrill Best Ball Invite at Merrill Golf Club.
Note: The Hodags finished fourth in a JV golf match at Indianhead Golf Course in Mosinee on Tuesday. Caleb Shefveland led the way with a nine-hole round of 49. Colton Leman shot 54, Cooper Radke shot 54, Tate Werner carded a 59 and Kody Litzen shot 73.
