The Rhinelander Kiwanis Club has launched a fundraising campaign to allow people in the Rhinelander community to donate money to provide humanitarian relief to the people of Ukraine and be sure the money will go where it is intended.

"The mission of our campaign is simple. We want to provide an easy path for people to donate money to help the Ukrainian people. There are Kiwanis clubs in communities in and around Ukraine that have been supplying food, water and essentials to the people for weeks already," said Ryan Hetland, Rhinelander Kiwanis Club member.

Hetland said that money collected at area businesses, or through a GoFundMe page set up for the campaign, will be sent to the Kiwanis Luxembourg Foundation in Europe.

"The foundation is the funding source of Kiwanis Clubs in Slovakia and Romania that border Ukraine to help them provide food, shelter and clothing for Ukrainian people," Hetland said in a phone call Friday morning. "The need is immediate and will be ongoing. We are partnering with local businesses to accept donations to provide these life-supporting essentials to the Ukrainian people."

Hetland said the goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of May.

"If we don't get that, I'll be very disappointed," he added.

Speaking at a press conference Friday announcing the campaign, Stephanie Dahlquist, Rhinelander Kiwanis Club president, said at it was a "no-brainer" that the club would step up to help Ukraine. The country was invaded by Russia in late February.

"Most people around here probably have no idea where Ukraine is, most Ukrainians have no idea where Wisconsin is," Hetland said at the press conference. "Let's change that. Let's do some good."

Checks payable to Rhinelander Kiwanis Club will be accepted at the following locations; Peoples State Bank, YMCA of the Northwoods, LaSalle St. Securities, Animal Health Care Center, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Ripco Credit Union.

Checks can also be mailed to Rhinelander Kiwanis P.O. Box 613 or see their GoFundMe site for online donations. People donating $100 or more will receive a T-shirt recognizing their contribution.
