James (Bing) Ronyak, age 79, passed away March 5, peacefully at home, after a two-and-a-half-year illness.

Jim was born in Milwaukee to Bernard and Mildred (Schreiter) Ronyak in 1942. He was a 1961 graduate of Pius XI high school. He was employed at various jobs and in 1969 graduated from UW-Whitewater. In August of that year, he married Eileen Scobey and they moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where Jim earned his master's degree in social work at U of Iowa. In 1971, the couple moved to Rhinelander, where Jim began his 27-year career as a state of Wisconsin social worker.

Jim loved the Northwoods and its recreational opportunities. He fished, hunted, bowled, golfed, planted and tended a huge garden, and started a small apple orchard and grape vineyard. Many of Jim's excess garden vegetables and apples were donated to the food pantry and the homeless shelter. Every spring you could find Jim tapping maple trees and boiling the sap for syrup. Then, in the fall, he would head to the rice beds and harvest wild rice with a friend. He heated the home with firewood that he and his sons harvested, teaching his sons to work hard and work together.

Jim leaves behind a loving wife, Eileen; three kind and wonderful sons, Bernie (Jennifer) of Angelica, Danny (Cori) of Spokane, Wash., and Tony (Carmen), Carson City, Nev.; and seven grandchildren who loved his storytelling and playful nature - Michaela, James, Courtney, Alexa, Eli, Ben, and Jack. He is also survived by his sister Susan (Dan) Bembenek of Minneapolis and a brother, Paul (Lea Fon) Ronyak of Coon Rapids, Minn. and many relatives and friends.

The family thanks the Compassus Hospice staff for their outstanding compassion and care.

The visitation and Memorial Mass will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at 235 King Street on Saturday March 19, 2022. The visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Jim, may be given to the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing-Frederick Place.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hildebrand Funeral Home & Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501, 715-365-4343. Everyone is invited to sign the guestbook or leave an online condolence at www.hildebrandrussfh.com.
