Joy was born March 4, 1923, in Milwaukee, to Elmer and Ruth (Wolcott) Cullen.
She grew up in Janesville, graduating from high school there before attending Ripon College where she majored in Biology/Chemistry, was active in the Kappa Sigma Chi sorority, met Russell Holperin, and graduated in 1948.
Russ and Joy married in October 1949, and joined Russ' family in the grocery business in Eagle River.
The Holperins had four children, Jim (Kathy), Mark (Kathy), David (Julie) and Jane (Roger) Shadick who all still live in the area.
Joy was an active, creative and inspirational mother and housewife who emphasized to her children the importance of education, kindness and service.
She was deeply involved in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, teaching Sunday School and serving on various boards and committees.
She was active in the community as a Cub Scout den mother, cancer fundraiser, nursing home volunteer, and library and arts advocate and donor, among other civic involvements.
Russ died in 1993, and five years later Joy married Jim Moon, a retired Financial and Division Manager at Avery-Denison in Ohio and long-time Eagle River summer resident.
Throughout her life, Joy was an avid reader, competitive bridge player and fitness enthusiast who loved to travel. She worked at her son Mark's business (TV Tronics) well into her 90s.
In addition to her children, Joy Holperin is survived by her husband, Jim Moon; and his children and grandchildren; and by nine Holperin grandchildren, Christopher (Amanda), Andrew (Jennifer Jackl), Timothy (Melissa), Daniel, Theresa (Rocky) Ligocki, Maxwell, Arianna, Derek Shadick and Britta Mork; as well as two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Laura Holperin.
There will be visitation at the United Church of Christ in Eagle River at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 30, followed by a service at 11 a.m.
Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home is serving the family and information regarding services and visitation will be available at gaffney-busha.com.
The family would like to thank the professional staff at Dianne's Home In The Northwoods for providing such excellent care over the last year.
Memorials in Joy's name may be sent to the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library, or the Northwoods Children's Museum, both in Eagle River.
