All of St. Germain's runs came via a combination of walks and errors over the final two innings.
Rhinelander built a comfortable 8-0 lead through five innings and held off St. Germain's late charge as the teams went all seven innings before running into the two-hour time limit.
Sawyer Bishop got things started for Rhinelander with a two-run single in the second that scored Abe Gretzinger and Aiden Lueder, who both walked to reach base.
The bottom of Rhinelander's 18-man batting order was able to add to the lead in the fourth courtesy of some erratic St. Germain pitching.
Allen Wiznewski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Braydon Barnhill. Brock Sternitzky then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
Jackson Weinzatl walked and stole two bases in the fifth before scoring on a Conner Rappley single. A pair of two-out errors allowed Abe Gretzinger, Lueder and Cooper Jahn to all come across to give Rhinelander an eight-run lead. The Hodags tacked on one more run in the sixth as Weston Kibler singled and later scored on a wild pitch.
Hodag pitching, meanwhile, had sat down 14 straight St. Germain batters before a two-out error in the sixth. A bases-loaded walk and a pair of wild pitches with runners on third allowed three runs to score. St. Germain got one more in the seventh on a trio of walks and a passed ball.
Jackson Waydick, Lueder, Rappley and Gretzinger combined to hold St. Germain hitless, striking out 15 between them over seven innings. Waydick started and went two innings. Lueder pitched two perfect innings of relief to earn the win. Rappley allowed three unearned runs over 1 2/3 innings and Gretzinger gave up an earned run over the final 1 1/3 innings.
Weinzatl added a first-inning hit for the Hodags, who held a 4-0 advantage in the hit column over St. Germain.
With the win Rhinelander (5-1) moved back into a first place tie in the Prep League with Crandon, while Eagle River sat a half-game back at 5-2. Rhinelander was scheduled to play at Eagle River Thursday in a game ate concluded after deadline and will be home to take on Tomahawk this coming Monday.
Rhinelander Black drops third straight
Rhinelander Black could not hold on after rallying to take the lead in the sixth inning Tuesday night, as it dropped its third straight in Northwoods Senior League play with a 7-4 loss to Tomahawk.
Scoreless through four, Tomahawk got a run in the fifth on a single, compounded by a two-base error in the outfield, followed by an RBI groundout and then got two more runs in the sixth.
Rhinelander rallied in the bottom of the sixth as Dylan VanderBunt singled, Barak Rappley had a base hit and Seth Nofftz reached on an error to load the bases with one out. Caden Sieker then drilled a 1-2 pitch to the right-center gap for a game-tying triple. Sieker later scored on a wild pitch to give Rhinelander a 4-3 lead.
The Hodags were unable to close it out, however, as a double with the bases loaded put Tomahawk back in front. A wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk gave the Hatchets two more insurance runs.
VanderBunt had two of Rhinelander's four hits in the game, and pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the game. Mason Schmidt pitch three innings, allowing an unearned run on only one hit.
Ben Olson allowed two runs in the sixth and came back on to pitch in the seventh after Rappley was unable to earn the save, walking five and allowing a double in seven batters faced.
The loss dropped Rhinelander Black (3-3) to fourth in the league standings ahead of a game against Eagle River on Wednesday that concluded after deadline. Rhinelander Black travels to Lakeland Gray this coming Tuesday.
