The Leadership Oneida County (LOC) program, hosted by the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce, is extending an invitation to the general public to attend the unveiling and grand opening of the first ever self-guided Oneida County Courthouse Walking Tour.

At 10 a.m. Monday, June 20, members of the 2021-2022 Leadership Oneida County Class will be unveiling the plaques hung in the courthouse which will serve as a walking tour to residents and visitors, the group announced in a press release.

LOC is a nine-month program that prepares emerging leaders in Oneida County and creates an awareness of services and organizations within the county while reinforcing an individual's call to civic responsibility and citizen involvement. Each year LOC participants complete a community project. Upon hearing that the courthouse often is bombarded with citizens and visitors looking for a tour, a team consisting of Erin Gottsacker, Tommy Wartman, and Rachel Boehlen decided to help, the release states.

"When Erin, Tommy & Rachel brought this community project idea to me, I was so excited," said Lauren Sackett, RACC executive director. "This project is not only sharing a part of our county's history with the community, but this project team heard and saw a need in our community and worked hard to do something about it. It is inspiring."

Guests will have the ability to enter the courthouse during open hours, walk to the five wall plaques one at a time and read information or scan a QR code on the plaques to hear about the history, building, design and use of the courthouse, the release states. The unique plaques contain original pieces of broken green glass from the famous dome. Guests will also have access to brochures with the same information on them.

According to the release, the team acquired funding through a Rhinelander Community Foundation Grant and the Rhinelander Historical Society which served as their fiscal agent. The plaques were created by Custom Wood Products and Laser Engraving LLC, and are themselves worth the visit, the release notes.
