IRONWOOD, Mich. - A breakout senior campaign for Rhinelander's Audrey Schiek afforded her the opportunity to put on a Hodag basketball uniform one final time on Monday.

Schiek had seven points and nine rebounds as the Northern Wisconsin All-Stars fell to Northern Michigan 83-69 in the Kiwanis Border Bash All-Star Game at Gogebic Community College.

In one short year, Schiek went from a role off the bench for the Hodags to the team's leading scorer averaging 12 points per game and earning first-team All-Great Northern Conference honors. That allowed her to get an invite to a game that featured some of the best seniors from the northern half of Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

"I remember (RHS head girls' basketball) coach (Ryan) Clark calling me and saying, 'You got first-team all-conference,' and I was like this is insane. And then he follows up with, "And you're going to be playing in an all-star game,'" Schiek said. "That was when I was like (overwhelmed). I never pictured myself being there and it was just a really rewarding moment to know that I finally made it."

"It was super fun, putting on the No. 2 jersey for the last time was an amazing experience," Schiek added. "The girls I played with were super nice. Usually, it's a super-high intensity atmosphere and tonight I got to enjoy it, enjoy the game itself. I think it was a really good experience."

Northern Wisconsin's bid for the win ran out of gas down the stretch as Northern Michigan scored the final 12 points to break open what was a two-point game with 1:40 remaining.

Houghton's Paige Sleeman took home MVP honors, scoring a game-high 19 points. She made two free throws after nabbing an offensive rebound and then hit a 3 with 1:12 remaining to extend Northern Michigan's lead to 76-69.

Schiek picked up three fouls down the stretch as Northern Wisconsin tried to extend the game, but Northern Michigan made seven of its final 10 free throws to ice it.

"It was a close one, but we had to get those fouls in at the end," she said. "It went a little south but, I'm still really satisfied. Even though we didn't win, I'm really satisfied with the overall experience."

The teams were locked up at 13 following one quarter before Northern Wisconsin finally took the lead on a pair of free throws by Northwood's Emma Golembiewski with 10:35 remaining in the second. Northern Wisconsin extended the lead to as many as 11 in the quarter, led 37-31 at halftime, and kept the lead until late in the third while Sleeman hit a 3 to put Michigan ahead 53-52.

Northern Wisconsin tied the game on four separate occasions in the fourth quarter, but could not regain the lead.

Schiek scored the last five points of the first quarter for Northern Wisconsin - a 3 that tied the game at 11 with 2:48 left following by a pair of free throws with 20.6 left. She did not score again until a bucket early in the fourth that got Northern Wisconsin within two at 59-57.

Fellow Great Northern Conference first-teamer Kate Fitzgerald of Mosinee led the Northern Wisconsin squad with 14 points and eight rebounds.

"It was really fun to actually play with her. She was great. It was kind of fun to come together for once," Schiek said.

Golembiewski added 12 points and Amherst's Sydney Lehman had 10 for Northern Wisconsin.

Ishpeming Westwood's Natalie Prophet chipped in 17 points for Northern Michigan. Tessa Wagner, a 6-3 forward from Carney-Nadeau, had 13 points and 16 rebounds. Negaunee's Alyssa Hill had 12 points, including eight in the final quarter.

Schiek was reflective afterward as her high school athletic career officially came to a close.

"I'm just really thankful for coach Clark, coach Tara (Gremban), coach Kyle (Franson), my dad, Mr. (Paul) Johnson, who coached me when I was really young," she said. "They raised me and I'll never forget those roots, especially getting onto a court like this. I'm just really grateful for everything that they taught me and I was able to transfer it all over to this game.

"Some of the core values they've taught me, I'll carry with me the rest of my life."
