The green team knocked off Eagle River 9-3 on the road Monday before coming home Tuesday for an 11-7 win over Crandon at Stafford Field.
A six-run fourth inning proved to be the difference on Tuesday as Rhinelander Green jumped out to an 8-1 lead and held on despite Crandon scoring four times in its final at-bat.
Oscar Hanson and Mason Baker both walked and scored on wild pitches in the fourth inning. Richard Threlkeld added a sacrifice fly that plated Sam Schoppe. Owen Ives singled and scored on a wild pitch and Connor Augustine capped off the inning with a two-run single that plated Kyrle and Kaden Vanney.
Mason Baker added an RBI groundout that scored Alex Rappley in the fifth inning and two runs scored in the sixth when Kaden Vanney hit a fly ball to left that was dropped.
A throwing error helped Crandon score a run in the top of the first, but Rhinelander tied it in the second as Baker singled and stole second. He stole third as well and scored when the throw to the base sailed long into the outfield. Rhinelander took the lead in the third as Kaden Vanney walked and later scored on a wild pitch.
Alex Rappley picked up the win for Rhinelander, striking out 11 over 4 1/3 innings of relief. He gave up six runs on seven hits with three walks over that time. Johnny Turek started on the mound and allowed a run on a hit with five walks and a couple of strikeouts.
Ives finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored. Augustine, Rappley, Turek and Baker had the other hits for Rhinelander.
On Monday night, Rhinelander rallied for three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and then plated five insurance runs in the sixth as it got by Eagle River.
Kaden Vanney and Turek each had three hits in the contest while Hanson had two hits. Baker struck out seven over four innings and ended up a winner thanks to Rhinelander's fifth-inning rally. Augustine pitched the final three innings to get the save.
Rhinelander Green (2-1) returns to action Monday at home against Lakeland Gray.
Hodag prep suffers first loss
Rhinelander's Prep League team could not dig out of an early hole Tuesday, falling to Lakeland 6-4 at Stafford Field.
The Hodags gave up four runs in the first and two in the second to fall behind 6-0. While Rhinelander drew 10 walks during the contest, the team had only two hits and could not complete the rally.
Josh Willoughby singled in Conner Rappley in the bottom of the second to get Rhinelander on the board, but the Hodags didn't score again until the fifth when Riley Hull walked, stole two bases and scored on an errant throw down to third. Willoughby plated Rappley again in the sixth inning, this time on an RBI groundout, and Abe Gretzinger walked and scored on a wild pitch, but the Hodags got no further.
Landon Webster had Rhinelander's other hit, a one-out single in the seventh.
Sawyer Bishop took the loss for Rhinelander. He allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings. Seven of those hits came in the first two innings, including a pair of two-run singles by Lakeland's Nolan Johnson. Gretzinger struck out six, working around a hit and a hit batter in two innings of scoreless relief.
That loss came after Rhinelander defeated St. Germain on the road 8-2 Monday night. That game featured an inside-the-park home run by Jackson Weinzatl as part of a five-run third inning for the Hodags. Weinzatl and Rappley each recorded two hits in the contest while Parker McCone, Brayden Barnhill, Bishop, Gretzinger and Aiden Lueder all had one hit.
Lueder and McCone pitched in the contest. Individual pitching lines were not provided.
Rhinelander (3-1) is off until this coming Tuesday, when it will play at Tomahawk.
