Preppers walk it off vs. Eagle River
Rhinelander managed to get seven innings in before the two-hour time limit in Prep League play Wednesday night, and needed a little more than that to get past Eagle River.
Conner Rappley scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the last of the eighth inning as the Hodags edged Eagle River 4-3 in extra innings.
The Hodags squandered an early 3-0 lead in the contest as the Eagles got two runs back in the fourth and one more in the sixth to tie it.
Rhinelander got the winning run to third with two out in the seventh, but Brayden Barnhill grounded out to send the game to extra innings. Aiden Lueder worked around back-to-back two-out base hits to get a strikeout that ended the Eagles' threat in the eighth. It was Lueder's fourth strikeout in two innings as he picked up the win. In all, Rhinelander pitching recorded 18 strikeouts and issued only one walk in the game.
The Hodags got on the board in the first as Cooper Jahn walked and eventually scored on an Aiden Flannery infield hit to third. Rhinelander added two more runs in the third inning as Jackson Waydick hit double and scored on a passed ball. Hoyt Dantoin walked and then scored on a throwing error following a Rappley base hit.
In the eighth Weston Kibler, Rappley and Josh Willoughby all drew walks to load the bases with one out. Lueder then hit a ground ball back to the pitcher and the Eagles were able to throw home to cut down Kibler, representing the winning run. Parker McCone was at bat when a fastball sailed to the backstop, allowing Rappley to score from third.
Since the game crossed over the Prep League's two-hour time limit during the eighth inning, no ninth inning would have been played if Rhinelander failed to score, and the game would have been considered a tie.
Rappley started on the mound for Rhinelander, striking out four and allowing one hit over two innings. Waydick pitched two innings with five strikeouts, allowing a pair of unearned runs in the fourth as the Eagles scored two thanks to a two-out error and a wild pitch. Abe Gretzinger struck out five but could not get the save as the tying run scored with two out in the sixth on a walk, a passed ball and a pair of wild pitches.
Rhinelander, which batted all 19 players in uniform on Wednesday, got hits from Jahn, Waydick, Flannery, Rappley, Gretzinger and McCone.
