On the afternoon of May 17, 98 School District of Rhinelander elementary students and their families came together for the first ever Run Into Reading family engagement event. Families arrived at the Hodag Dome to pick up their travel passports and pre-registered students received a T-shirt. Families then went to visit a variety of places within Rhinelander. These places included Rhinelander City Hall, Rhinelander Police Station, WXPR, Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce, Northwoods Pets, Tom's Drawing Board, Rhinelander Public Library, Sarocka Park, Oneida County Courthouse and Mike Webster Stadium. Once families arrived at one of these visiting places, students asked volunteer docents a historical question. The docents then answered the question and gave a few other details of the historical question. For example, who was the first librarian of the Rhinelander Public Library? Miss Inez Van Tassel was the first librarian in charge. Students recorded their answers with their passports and asked the docent to initial. Three literacy skills were embedded into this portion of the event.

After students and their families made several stops, they came together at Pioneer Park for a delicious picnic dinner including a variety of yummy cookies donated by Trig's.

Students also received literacy kits. The kits were packed with Rhinelander trail maps donated by Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce, CAVOC maps, a brochure on the history of the Hodag, fun packs from WI DNR, bookmarks and erasers donated by Central Elementary PAC, keychains and stickers donated by Crescent PAC, a Scoopie Token donated by Culver's and books donated by the Rhinelander Women's Club. The Club also packed the literacy kits, prepared and served the dinner and donated funds toward the event. Other financial supporters for this inaugural event included Rhinelander Community Foundation, Papa Murphy's, and Northwoods Community Elementary School PAC. The bags for the kits were donated by Nicolet College. Following the picnic all of the remaining food was given to Frederick Place. All those participating in the event enjoyed laughter and learning some history of our city. Plans for next year are already underway.
