I. Russell Hutter
Russ was a well educated man who graduated from Milton Union High School in 1951. He received his B.S. Degree with majors in Biology and Conservation from Central State College (UW Stevens Point) in 1956, and he attended graduate school at the University of Michigan to receive his M.S. degree from the School of Natural Resources in the summer of 1961. Though this is where his formal education ended, he was involved in many publications by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction throughout his career, and rarely a day went by where he was not referencing a nature field guide next to his chair or keeping up on current events in the newspaper.
Throughout Russ' working life, he was also dedicated to educating others; starting his career as a Biology/Conservation teacher first at Nekoosa, then at Janesville. This is where Russ found his true passion for teaching the youth drivers education and he worked diligently for the next 24 years to make the state of Wisconsin a safer place to be a driver for everyone. He was responsible for the Wisconsin chapter of "Students Against Drunk Driving" and for the collaboration between the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to reduce deer hazards on highways. Russ received numerous awards for his dedication to the state.
When Russ was not working, hunting, fishing, or birding, he could be found giving back to his community; from the time he was in college through the end of his life, Russ took great pride in serving his community through a variety of organizations: Jaycees, American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, and the Lions Club to name a few.
Post-retirement, Russ spent his free time enjoying his home on Boom Lake, outside immersed in nature, and quality time spent with his wife, kids, and grandkids. Countless hours were spent in pursuit of the next trophy buck, spoiling the beloved family dog, or out on the pontoon with family spotting loons with their young.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; son Geoffrey (wife Amy), and granddaughters Kathryn and Madison of Avondale, Ariz.; son Kurt, (wife Maryanne), and granddaughter Jessica of Bellville; daughter Kimberly, (husband Jon "Boomer") Whitmyer, and grandsons Nathan and Brett in Phoenix, Ariz.; stepdaughter Amy, step-grandchildren Zoe and Eli of Harshaw; stepson Benjamin, step-grandchildren Sawyer and Abbey of Oregon, Wis.
