The majority of this past spring's Rhinelander High School varsity golf team took part in Monday's stop at Timber Ridge and seven Rhinelander players took part in the event overall.
Graduated senior Kole Gechas led the Rhinelander contingent, carding a 7-over-par round of 79 to finish tied for sixth overall and tied for fourth in the 16-to-18-year-old division. Gechas, who started his day on the par-5 11th hole, made a birdie on 15 to get to 1-under but then hit a rough stretch midway through his round, playing holes 17-4 in eight over. He birdied the seventh hole to get back to 6-over, but bogeyed the eighth and parred his final two holes of the day.
Brody Kowieski, a sophomore-to-be, finished strong after a slow start to card an 84 to place tied for 16th overall and tied for sixth in the 14-15 category. Starting on the seventh, Kowieski played his first 11 holes in 12 over, but played the final seven holes in even par, including back-to-back birdies in the 18th and first holes.
Senior-to-be Andrew Henrichs tied for 23rd with an 89. His day was highlighted by a birdie on the par-4 second hole. Graduated senior Cal Laggis shot 91 to finish in a tie for 26th.
Hank Kowieski, a Class of 2027 player, played up in the 14-15 category and shot 105, placing 36th. Rhinelander had two players in the 12-13 category with Sam Shrock (104) finishing fourth and Grant Gremban (120) tying for fifth.
The Kowieski brothers, Shrock and Gremban also took part in Sunday's event at Eagle River Golf Course, with Brody Kowieski shooting a 5-over 77 to tie for fourth overall and place second in the 14-15 category. He recorded birdies on three of Eagle River's four par 5s as he shot 39 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine.
Hank Kowieski shot 111 in the 14-15 category. Shrock shot 87 to finish second in the 12-13 category while Gremban shot 122.
Brody Kowieski has played the most junior tour events of the Rhinelander contingent this summer, making five starts. Prior to Sunday's event, his best finish was a tie for 10th at the Par 3 Championship July 7 at The Sandbox course at Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa.
Henrichs and Gechas had each made one start prior to the Northwoods swing. Gechas tied for sixth in an event July 5 at Bullseye Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Henrichs tied for 31st in an event held June 20 in Lake Geneva.
Hank Kowieski, Laggis, Shrock and Gremban all made their junior tour debuts for the summer during this week's Northwoods swing.
Though the Wisconsin PGA Junior Tour has 48 stops over the summer, the two held Sunday and Monday in the Northwoods are by far the closest stops of the year for Rhinelander area golfers. The only other Junior Tour event within an hour of Rhinelander will take place Aug. 11 at Wausau Country Club.
