Vince White struck out 12 over five innings and hit a game-ending three-run home run in the fifth as Rhinelander defeated Pool B winner Appleton National 11-1 Monday at Doepke Park.
The win advanced the Hodags to face Wausau National in a winners' bracket game on Tuesday and the Hodags were ahead 3-1 through 1 1/2 innings before a strong thunderstorm rolled in and canceled play for the remainder of the evening.
Rhinelander, serving as the home team Monday night, cranked out 11 hits, took the lead in the bottom of the fist inning and never looked back.
Brayden Dervetski went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the contest, including a two-base knock to start things for the Hodags in the bottom of the first. He came around to score after a throw to first sailed wide on an infield hit by White.
Tommy Eades added two-run double for the Hodags in the third before Matthew Haselton delivered an RBI double to right. Haselton later scored on a throwing error following a wild pitch to give Rhinelander a 5-0 cushion.
Appleton's lone run came in the top of the fourth as Alex Ryan singled to drive on Owen Rein. Rhinelander answered in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single by Blake Bauer the scored Johnny Baker and then plated five runs in the fifth, all with two out, to end it.
Nolan Pasanen and Trevor Denton were both hit by pitches before Henry Schmitz singled to load the bases with one out. Following a Baker strikeout, Dervetski hit a two-run double to deep left before White ended it with a three-run blast - his third home run in four tournament games.
White gave up just three hits and one walk to earn the win but threw 77 pitches, making him ineligible to pitch again until Saturday, should the Hodags still be alive in a winner-take-all championship game.
In addition to Dervetski's four hits, White was 3-for-4 at the plate, finishing a triple short of the cycle. Bauer, Eades, Denton and Schmitz had the other hits for the Hodags.
Appleton National was eliminated from the tournament Tuesday with a 4-3 loss in seven innings to Wausau American.
Rhinelander and Wausau National took the field Tuesday evening under threatening skies. Wausau National struck first, loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the first before eventually getting a run on a one-out wild pitch. The Hodags answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Dervetski and White started the frame with singles before Bauer doubled home Dervetski. White later scored on a wild pitch and Bauer came around on a groundout by Douglas Hartmann. The Nationals had gone three-up, three-down in the top of the second before the game was called due to fast-approaching storm clouds.
Rhinelander and Wausau National were set to resume their game Wednesday evening, with the winner playing again tonight and the loser having to face Wausau American in an elimination game Thursday evening.
Rhinelander's 10U All-Star team began district play Monday night with a 7-1 loss to Wausau American in Merrill.
The game was tied 1-1 after one inning as Eli Bauer reached on an error and scored on a two-out wild pitch for the Hodags. That was pretty much all the offense Rhinelander could muster, as Wausau sat down 15 Rhinelander batters in a row at one point before the Hodags got their lone hit, a two-out single by Connor Clark in the sixth.
The Americans, meanwhile, scored on two runs to take the lead for good in the third. They tacked on another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Connor Clark, Colton Jahn, Bauer, Collin Jorata and Jeter Vander Galien all pitched for Rhinelander in the contest and combined to strike out eight batters.
Like their 12U counterparts, the Hodag 10Us ran into weather issues on Tuesday as storms wiped out play for the day and set the pool schedule back one day. Rhinelander was set to face Antigo Wednesday and Merrill on Thursday. The top two teams in the four-team pool will advance to Week 2 play beginning this coming Monday at Doepke Park.
