The game was called with the one on and two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Rhinelander had just scored three times in the bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie.
The Hodags did it without the aid of a hit. Hunter Bell was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and walks by Cole Schmidt and Myles Eagleson loaded the bases with one out. Kade Tessman drove in a run and reached on an error to second. Zach Webster and Dylan VanderBunt drew bases loaded walks to give Rhinelander a three-run cushion.
In fact, Rhinelander was not credited with a hit in the contest, according to the team's scorebook. The Hodags drew four walks, however, and were hit by three pitches in three innings.
Rhinelander took the lead in the bottom of the first at Seth Nofftz walked and scored on a wild pitch. Eagle River tied it on the top of the second with a two-out base hit.
Mason Schmidt started and went three innings for Rhinelander in the win. He allowed a run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts. VanderBunt was pitching in the fourth when play was halted. He had retired the first two batters before issuing a two-out walk.
Rhinelander Black (4-6) was scheduled to close out the season against Crandon Wednesday and Three Lakes Thursday in games that concluded after deadline for today's edition.
Rhinelander Green ends in tie
Rhinelander Green ended its season with a 3-3 tie against Senior League-leading Crandon on the road Tuesday night. Further details were not immediately available. The Green team sits third in the league standings as its season ended with an 8-3-1 record.
Rhinelander Prep credited with forfeit wins
When Rhinelander's Prep League team ended its regular season last Thursday it appeared uncertain if it would be able to catch Crandon. Crandon was shown at 11-1 in the league standings while Rhinelander was at 10-2 with no scheduled games remaining for either team.
However, on Tuesday the Northwoods Babe Ruth League went back and retroactively awarded Rhinelander with forfeit victories in two games that were scheduled to be played but did not take place - a game at Lakeland May 25 and a home game against Crandon June 3.
Rhinelander now shows at 12-2 with Crandon at 11-2, with Crandon still pending a game against St. Germain that could result in a tie in the league standings. A make-up date for that contest was not posted on the league website as of press time.
Rhinelander and Crandon split their two contested games this year - both in Crandon. The Hodags won the first meeting 10-5 June 15, but the Cardinals took the rematch 8-6 June 30.
