Rhinelander Green came into Thursday's rematch winners of seven of their last nine while Rhinelander Black had dropped five straight league games. Those trends continued Thursday.
Rhinelander Green took the lead with three runs in the second and never looked back, defeating Rhinelander Black 9-2 at Stafford Field.
The Green team scored nine unanswered runs after Rhinelander Black jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Tyler Chariton and a two-out RBI single by Declyn Adams.
Rhinelander Green got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first as Mason Baker reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.
Rhinelander Green jumped ahead in the second as Owen Ives reached on an error and scored on a Sam Schoppe base hit. Schoppe later scored on a passed ball and Jack Turek reached on an error that scored his older brother, Johnny, to make it 4-2 Green.
Baker singled to lead off the third and came around on a Connor Augustine ground out and Rhinelander Green slammed the door in the fifth with a four-run frame. Conner Terzinski walked and scored on a double by Baker. A two-out error allowed Alex Rappley to reach and scored both Kaden Vanney and Baker. Ives followed with an RBI single that accounted for the final margin.
Vanney pitched into the seventh inning, striking out 12 as he earned the win for Rhinelander Green. He allowed two runs on five hits and had four walks. Oscar Hanson inherited a two-on, nobody-out jam in the top of the seventh and then hit Adams with a pitch to load the bases, but struck out the next three batters to close out the game.
Dylan VanderBunt took the loss for Rhinelander Black, allowing five runs - three earned - on four hits with four strikeouts over three innings. Mason Schmidt came on in relief and gave up four runs - one earned - on three hits over the final three innings with five strikeouts.
Rhinelander Green outhit Rhinelander Black 7-5 in the contest. Baker and Ives each had two hits for Rhinelander Green while Chariton had two hits for Rhinelander Black.
Rhinelander Green (8-3) closes out the season tonight at Crandon. Rhinelander Black (3-6) finishes its season with home games against Eagle River tonight and Three Lakes on Thursday, and a road game at Crandon on Wednesday.
Rhinelander Prep avenges earlier loss
Rhinelander made up for one of its two losses this season in Northwoods Babe Ruth Prep League play, but it was not enough to make up ground in its quest for the league title.
The Hodags routed Lakeland 10-0 Thursday at Stafford Field to finish their season 10-2, one game behind Crandon which swept a doubleheader from third-place Eagle River Wednesday to finish at 11-1.
The Hodags lost 6-4 to Lakeland in Rhinelander exactly one month earlier, but scored more than that in the first inning alone on Thursday, plating five in the frame. Abe Gretzinger had a two-run single as part of the inning and the Hodags had five hits in all in the opening stanza.
Rhinelander did not score again until the fourth when Conner Rappley and Gretzinger both walked and scored on wild pitches. Two more runs came across after Kaden Rodziczak reached on a two-out error. The Hodags ended it in the fifth with the bases loaded as Rappley scored on a wild pitch.
Aiden Lueder picked up the win, striking out four and allowing only one walk in two innings of relief. Gretzinger pitched the first two innings for Rhinelander while Sawyer Bishop finished out the game, striking out two in the fifth.
