Connor Augustine came up clutch with a walk-off single as the Hodags defeated Three Lakes 10-9 in the first game of a twinbill at Stafford Field. Alex Rappley logged five shutout innings as Rhinelander defeated the Bluejays 9-0 in the nightcap.
The teams played two five-inning games Tuesday after a scheduled meeting between the sides in Three Lakes last month was postponed.
The Bluejays appeared primed to pull an upset, up 9-8 after a single and an error allowed the go-ahead run to score with one out in the top of the fifth.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the inning, Richard Threlkeld singled to left and Rhinelander sent Johnny Turek from second. Turek dove around the tag in a close play at the plate following a relay to tie the game, but Oscar Hanson got caught in a rundown between second and third for the second out of the inning. Kyrle Vanney singled and Kaden Vanney was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Augustine, who singled to right to drive in the winning run.
The first game was wild from the outset. Three Lakes scored three runs in the top of the inning, only to see Rhinelander answer with five in the bottom of the inning. Augustine, Rappley, Owen Ives, Mason Baker and Johnny Turek all reached base and scored as part of the inning.
Three Lakes, got four runs back in a stretch that included four straight walks and two hit batters that ended Turek's time on the mound. Baker came on to work the final 3 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Rappley singled home Kaden Vanney to make it 7-6 after two innings. Three Lakes got a run on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth before Rappley tied it with a two-out base hit that scored Threlkeld and Kaden Vanney.
Rappley did it more with his arm in Game 2 as Three Lakes got only one runner in scoring position, and that came on a one-out double in the second. Rappley fanned eight batters, scattered three hits and allowed three walks to pick up the win.
Augustine ended Game 1 with a big hit and started Game 2 with another, as his two-run single gave Rhinelander the lead in the first. The Hodags didn't score again until the third when Kyrle Vanney doubled and came around on a two-out single by Baker.
Ives delivered a two-run single followed by an RBI base knock by Sam Schoppe to make it 6-0 in the fourth and the Hodags tacked on three more in the fifth as Schoppe reached on an error and drove in Augustine. Two more errors allowed Rappley and Schoppe to come around and account for the final margin.
Rhinelander Green (7-3) was scheduled to face intra-city rival Rhinelander Black Thursday at Stafford Field and will close out its season this Tuesday on the road at Crandon.
