Things went much more smoothly for the Hodags Friday night in the rematch.
Ava Lamers and Brynn Brzycki had 13 points each to lead the way and the Hodags put the breaks on the Eagles, rolling to a 67-24 win at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The 24 points were fewer than the Hodags allowed in the first half alone Dec. 20 at Northland Pines when they led 45-27 at the half, despite several starters with three or more fouls.
"I wanted to see if we could keep them around 30 or the low 30s," Hodag coach Ryan Clark said. "The last time we played them we won by a wide margin but I thought we made a lot of fouls and we were a little sloppy on defense at times. I thought we did a pretty good job in this game of just settling in and just playing aggressive on defense, but in position and solid. We didn't give them anything easy.
"I thought we played a nice, clean game."
Rhinelander took command with a 19-2 run in the first half and then scored 12 in a row after back-to-back Northland Pines buckets to build a 34-9 advantage with just under five minutes to play in the first half.
Rhinelander led 40-14 at the break and then opened the second half on a 19-2 run to put the game out of reach.
The Hodags attacked Northland Pines man-to-man defense and spread the wealth around. Audrey Schiek had 10 points while Annika Johnson and Lily Treder each had eight.
The Hodags finished with 21 assists for the second straight game and committed a season-low 13 turnovers.
"I thought we did a really good job posting up and we had a lot of extra passes," Clark said. "I felt like everyone was contributing and then you look at the book and it's really balanced. It was just a solid night.
"Audrey, Annika, Ava and Brynn, I thought they all found their spots to seal and post up a body inside. We took advantage of that and had some good interior passing to each other. Then we had some timely 3s again."
Rhinelander, meanwhile, forced 35 turnovers and scored 38 points off turnovers in the contest. The Hodags were 41% (28 of 69) from the field overall in the contest. Rhinelander turned it over to the reserves with the running-clock rule in effect over the final nine minutes of the contest. Tori Riopel had four points in late action while Cadence Lund knocked down a 3.
Northland Pines was held to 27% on 9 of 33 shooting. Emily Weber had eight points to lead the Eagles (4-13, 2-6 Great Northern).
Rhinelander (12-6, 6-2 Great Northern) hosts Wausau East in a non-conference contest tonight at the Miazga Gym, leading up to a big road test at conference-leading Mosinee this coming Friday.
"We've got to take care of business on Tuesday at home. East is really well coached and they're much improved. That will be a good test for us," Clark said. "We've got to get that win and then that Friday night game (at Mosinee), that says a lot about (us). Mosinee's No. 10 in state, undefeated. It will be a tough place to play, but that's an important game for us. That will be a toughness game, to see how far we've come."
