Rhinelander posted a 106.825 on Thursday as it fell to Antigo's 122.875 in a Great Northern Conference Large-Small division crossover dual at Sheldon Fieldhouse.
Sophie Miljevich, back after missing the Jan. 8 Wisconsin Rapids Invite due to illness, led the Hodags with a fourth-place finish in the all-around and the team had sophomore Annabelle Huff in the lineup for the first time this season. That gave the Hodags six competitors on Thursday instead of the four they had for three of their first four meets of the season.
Rhinelander surpassed its season high of 106.3 points set Dec. 29 at its home Snowflake Invitational.
"Having Sophie back was nice and we now have Annabelle, who was able to join the rotation now. That's going to change things up a little bit moving forward," coach Heather Sturtevant said. "Every meet we're just trying to be consistent, trying to make improvements as we can. We're really to the halfway mark of the season, so now (the judges) are expecting everybody to be a little cleaner, the routines to be a little tighter. They're judging a little harder."
Miljevich had the best night for Rhinelander, recording personal-bests in two events plus the all-around as she finished fourth at a 29.825. The freshman had a no-fall balance beam routine which placed second on the night (7.55) and added a third-place finish on the uneven bars (7.0).
"Sophie's really knocking on that 30-mark for all-around. We know that we can still make improvements. Hopefully we can get there," Sturtevant said.
Miljevich was also Rhinelander's top scorer on the floor exercise (fifth, 7.775) while junior Payton Rudawski led the way on vault (fifth, 7.55).
Wendy Fronk was sixth in the all-around (25.25) on Thursday while Claire Wilberding was seventh (23.6). Wilberding's night was highlighted by a personal-best 6.95 on balance beam.
Huff added a personal best for Rhinelander on floor (6.7) while Leta Cole had a personal best uneven bars routine (5.55). Rhinelander had its best team bars score of the season at 21.0.
"Bars is still our weakest event as a team, but yet we really did better as a team today," Sturtevant noted. "We had a 21, and we had to take a 16 at one meet. Leta and Sophie both got personal bests. Annabelle, this was her first time, and Claire and Wendy weren't far off where they've been."
Antigo's Andrea Shestak won three of the four events and took the all-around with a 32.1. Kaley Zarda won the floor exercise and was second in the all-around. The Robins outscored the Hodags in every event.
Thursday's meet was the first of four competitions for Rhinelander in Antigo this season. The Hodags will return to Antigo this weekend for the Red Robin Invite. Sheldon Fieldhouse will also play host to the GNC meet Feb. 19 and WIAA sectionals Feb. 25.
The Hodags are back in action tonight at Wisconsin Rapids for another GNC Large-Small crossover that does not impact the conference standings. Rhinelander's next GNC Small dual is Feb. 1 at Lakeland.
"We have two more meets before we see Lakeland, so I'm looking forward to some more personal bests," Sturtevant said.
