Maria Velat of Cooper Country (Mich.) Nordic competes in an adaptive ski race as part of the Hodag Challenge Nordic ski race at the Cedric A. Vig Outdoor Classroom in Rhinelander Saturday, Jan. 22. Velat is accompanied by a handful of guides as she uses a specialized chair equipped with skis to complete the 1.2-kilometer course. The Hodag Challenge drew more than 300 high school, middle school and elementary school skiers from across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to CAVOC this weekend. Velat was the only adaptive skier in the field.
