Schiek's career-high 33 points lead Lady Hodags in rout
The Hodags senior scored a career-high 33 points, and finished one steal shy of a triple-double, as Rhinelander routed Tomahawk 60-13 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
The Hodags held the overmatched Hatchets without a field goal in the first half and led 40-5 at the break before extending its bench in the second half to give some underclassmen some rare, extended varsity minutes.
"I thought it was a good experience," Hodag coach Ryan Clark said. "We got all 13 kids some quality minutes on the court. Sometimes it's fun to mix your veteran leaders with some of your future players and let them play together a little bit. Everyone that came in did a nice job."
When Schiek was on the floor, odds are she was near the basketball in some way, shape or form. She shot 12 of 22 from the field and was 7 of 11 from the foul line. She collected 10 rebounds -all on the offensive glass -and had nine steals. She also added a team-high four assists, all in just 24 minutes of action.
Schiek, who has developed into Rhinelander's leading scorer this season at 13.3 points per game, had more points Friday night than she did all of last season.
"I didn't realize Audrey had that many points," Clark said afterward. "It's hard believe but I think if the 1-3-1 has ever done anything for somebody, it's really made her kind of come out of her shell and be a player. She did a nice job."
Ava Lamers scored 10 points for Rhinelander and seven players got in the book for the Hodags on Friday.
The Hodags scored the game's first 15 points and led 25-1 with just under seven minutes to play in the first half.
Tomahawk finally recorded its first field goal with 16:07 to play in the second as Gracie Barnett cut inside for a hoop. Rhinelander's pressure stymied Tomahawk all night as the Hatchets committed 51 turnovers and were only 3 of 15 from the field.
The Hodags were without forward Brynn Brzycki (knee) for the contest, but the team had plenty of minutes for either split time varsity/JV, or exclusively JV players in the contest. Leah Jamison had six points on a pair of 3-pointers, Kelsey Winter added a point on a free throw and the Hodags used a season-high 13 players on Friday night.
Rhinelander also tried to extend its bench in the GNC opener at Tomahawk Nov. 30, which the Hodags won 66-11. But the reserves struggled in what was the first varsity game action for most of them. Clark said that wasn't the case on Friday, a testament to how his underclassmen have improved over the course of the season.
"The first matchup we were a little bit nervous to be on the court, a little sloppy, indecisive, lacking confidence," he said. "Tonight they were looking to score - whether it's getting their first varsity points or adding to their varsity total.
"They've come a long way since them and it's nice to see. I think our young guards are doing well. Morgan Van Zile's becoming a nice little basketball player for us, (so is) Leah Jamison. We've got two nice little guards coming up, then two freshmen guards in Cadence (Lund) and Dawson (Barkus). Kelsey Winter's a nice, rebounding, physical post player. (Coach) Terry (Nordine) has done a really nice job with that JV group. They're 8-4 on the year, they're playing better and they can step on the varsity court with us and play with us. It's nice to reward them with play."
Rhinelander (10-5, 5-2 Great Northern) moved back into a tie for second in the conference after Mosinee edged Lakeland 50-46 on Friday night. The Hodags are idle in conference play this week and will return to action Friday night in a non-conference contest at Stevens Point.
