WAUSAU - With a large sampling of the Wisconsin Nordic Ski League in attendance, the Rhinelander High School Nordic ski team had its first chance to race in the classic technique on Saturday, taking part in the Snekkevik Ski Races at Nine Mile Forest.

No official team scores were posted in the meet. Rhinelander's top finishers in the girls' division placed in the middle of the pack, while Rhinelander's boys finished in the bottom fourth of the field.

"They did a great job and they were right where we would expect them," RHS assistant ski coach Jim Wood said of the girls' finish. "Overall, the boys had a good race too."

Wood was in charge of the team on Saturday with head coach Charil Reis out of the area due to a prior family commitment.

Rhinelander seniors Anna Wood and Liana Teter raced neck-and-neck for the team's No. 1 position down the stretch of the 6.4-kilometer race. Wood got the better of her teammate by 4.2 seconds at the line, placing 19th in the girls' junior/senior division and 33rd overall with at time of 24 minutes, 19.1 seconds. Teter was 20th in class and 34th overall. Fellow senior teammate Callie Threlkeld was out of the lineup due to illness.

"I think the girls did about what we would expect, middle of the pack," coach Wood said. "Anna and Liana head-to-head, I think you're going to see that all year. Our scrimmage race up at ABR they were neck-and-neck at the finish."

Freshman Brynn Teter, Liana's younger sister, was third-fastest for Rhinelander, 47th overall in the field of 74 and 21st in the freshman/sophomore division at 26:04.5. Teammates Olivia Gillen and Juliana Smith were 48th and 49th overall.

"I'm starting to see them cluster together and then they kind of battle with each other and they have fun with it. I see a good team bonding out of that," coach Wood said. "Olivia Gillen had a great race and right with her at the end was Juliana Smith."

Travis White was Rhinelander's top skier on the boys' side, finishing 65th in a field of 75 at 23:45.6. Charlie Loomis (69th), Gavin Hackbarth (71st) and Iain Rumney (72nd) completed the Hodag contingent.

"Travis was the first boy. I know Travis wasn't feeling well," Wood said. "Then Charlie was second and he had a good race. I talked to him about his race and he felt good. Gavin, as a senior had a good, solid race."

Luna Grage (62nd), Evelyn Simonsen (69th) and Maria Hubler (72nd) rounded out the running order for the Hodag girls.

Wood said he was impressed with how the team's newer skiers handled the event.

"It's 13 degrees and 20-mile-an-hour winds and these kids are out skiing. There's a little apprehension to get started but, once they're going, they're racing their heart out," he said. "Evelyn and Maria fought through their first race in these conditions. On the boys' side Iain is new this year and had a good race."

Iola's Owen Williams (15:31.0) and Chippewa Valley's Fran Peterson (18:35.1) were the individual winners of the boys' and girls' races. Unofficial scoring complied by the River News showed the Ashwaubenon boys and Lakeland girls as having the best team scores in the field. Rhinelander was unofficially 10th in the boys' standings and 13th in the girls' standings.

The Hodags are scheduled to head to Minocqua on Thursday for the rescheduled Lakeland Invite which was postponed last month following the Dec. 16 windstorm. Rhinelander will also compete in the Hinderbinder this coming Saturday in Westboro.
