Bench placed in Snowshoe Park in tribute to Lions Club member
Club members, family and friends gathered recently to remember Dave and to enjoy fellowship. Lion Dave was a volunteer of great proportions who knew what it means "to serve," according to a club press release.
A club member for 26 years, he served on the Board of Directors for 20, the release states. Offices held included President and First through Third Vice Presidents. He was a master of organization.
Serving as club chair for the Lions Eye Bank, Lion Dave facilitated transportation of corneal donations to Madison in a pony express network. He also served as chairperson of the Snowshoe Park concessions for all community service clubs, making more than his share of hot dogs, hamburgers and brats for 16 years.
Awards bestowed upon Lion Dave included the Birch-Sturm and Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards. The Melvin Jones award, named for the founder of Lions Clubs, is a prestigious honor. Other awards included Lion of the Year, Gift of Sight, and the Leader Dog Tribute. He was involved in all club projects including vision screening, eyeglass recycling, highway clean-up and raffle ticket sales.
Only his wife, Phyllis, knows how many hours Dave spent serving the community. A snowmobiler and member of the New-Tom Snow Fleas, he served as a board member, trail groomer and brushing coordinator. He also organized local and annual club rides.
Dave loved the Cubs and the Bears, was an avid fisherman and golfer, and prepared the Club Roast entries for Minocqua's Beef-A-Rama.
While Dave is no longer with us, he will always be remembered as the "King of One-Liners," regaling all with "I have a true story." Surely the heavens are laughing with this service-minded Lion.
