Historian Dave Chrisinger, a 2005 graduate of Rhinelander High School, recently paid a virtual visit to some of the U.S. History classes at RHS. Last month, students in U.S. History classes were studying World War II and kicking off individual research projects aligned with the National History Day framework, according to a school district press release.

Prior to the visit students read Mr. Chrisinger's 2019 New York Times piece about World War II correspondent Ernie Pyle titled "The Man Who Told America the Truth about D-Day." Chrisinger then spoke with students about Pyle, World War II and provided tips about conducting historical research.

"One of the most important lessons I had to learn as a historian and as a writer is that a topic is not a story," Chrisinger told the students. "World War II is a topic, but the fact that Ernie Pyle's reporting about World War II changed the way the 'folks back home' understood what their sons were enduring in foxholes around the world - that's a story."

"Mr. Chrisinger's story connects with many of our students. It wasn't too long ago he was in the very classrooms and athletic fields our students use. Since then his work and research have taken him to Washington D.C., France, North Africa and more," said history teacher Wil Losch.

Upon graduating from Rhinelander, Chrisinger went to UW-Stevens Point and earned an undergraduate degree in History. After completing his graduate work in History at the University of Chicago, Chrisinger took his storytelling skills to the U.S. Government Accountability Office in Washington, D.C., where he helped turn complex data into relatable narratives for the U.S. Congress.

In 2019, Chrisinger started a first-of-its-kind writing program at the Harris School of Public Policy. He is currently working on a book about Ernie Pyle, set for publication next year through Penguin Press. This month, RHS students will have a local National History Day showcase before selected projects compete at the regional event on March 26 in Minocqua.
