David J. Raith, age 57, of Rhinelander, died on Nov. 29, 2021, in Eau Claire. He was born in Rhinelander on June 20, 1964, the son of Robert and Lorraine (Shepherd) Raith.

Dave graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1983 and immediately enlisted into the United States Army, serving in Central America, Germany, and several other locations all over the world. He deployed to many places in temporary duty status, some can be mentioned, others not. In Central America, he served under Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North. Dave served in the Army, attaining the rank of Specialist 4.

Upon separation from the Army, Dave worked for Boldt Construction, working many construction jobs throughout the state and several locally, including construction work at Rhinelander's Mill. Dave later worked many years at St. Mary's Hospital, and shortly after leaving work at the hospital, he went to work for the Rhinelander Mill, where he worked until his untimely death.

Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid follower of the Green Bay Packers. But he was especially known for his skills in smoking various meats and fish. If Dave was out in the yard smoking a brisket or salmon, he drew a crowd. Everyone stopping by, having smelled the smoking of meats, waited patiently for his "delectable delights." Many have tried and truly enjoyed the smoked items Dave had prepared. His smoking skills will truly be missed.

Unique to Dave was his ability to make friends with anyone and size most up without a blink of the eye. He never met a stranger in life, only friends he'd never encountered previously. He was a likeable guy and a self-taught person. There was seldom a time when he'd speak to anyone and speak on just about any topic and he could always hold his own with whatever the discussion might be about. More than anything else, Dave enjoyed telling stories and jokes, especially those that made people laugh.

Dave is survived by his sisters Theresa (Mark) Lammert of Rhinelander, Lori Bergman of Clintonville, and his brothers Buck (Mary) Raith of Kissimmee, Fla. and Jeff (Linda) Raith of Tomahawk. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Cheryl L. Raith, and his younger brother, Thomas A. Raith

A visitation for Dave will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022 from 9 to 11 a.m. with a memorial service following at 11 a.m., all at the St. Mark Lutheran Church. Reverend Richard Miller will be officiating. You may leave your private condolences for the Raith family at www.carlsonfh.com. The Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414) is serving the Raith family.
