Prior to winning a gold medal in Beijing, Iron River, Michigan's Nick Baumgartner was on the slopes at Ski Brule, where he had a chance to ride with the Rhinelander/Northland Pines Alpine Ski team.

Baumgartner and teammate Lindsey Jacobellis won the debut of mixed snowboard cross at the Beijing Winter Olympics last Saturday, a development that delighted the Hodag ski team.

"We saw him a lot this year. Because of COVID stuff he skipped a couple of races, so he was back home and spent a lot of time with the kids," coach Rod Olson said. "It was awesome to see him (win). We had phones lighting up, my sons in California and Nevada, they were on it. I'm sure there's a flurry of activity all over Northern Wisconsin and the UP. His energy is just incredible and one of the things the kids learn the most is he can get in 60 runs in a day, just by never stopping, just constant back and forth. The repetition and the excitement and the energy that he brings to our program when he's there, is awesome, and I think the kids feed off of that."
