Honorably discharged from the Army, John returned to Wausau, found Jan, the love of his life, and began to raise his family. It was while in a boat on a muskie fishing trip, John's friend, the late Clint West, shared the hope of Jesus Christ. John's new faith in Jesus had quite the impact on the family with a drastic change of lifestyle and membership at Immanuel Baptist Church. Fort Wilderness Camp in McNaughton became a formative location for spiritual growth while enjoying the Northwoods. With an outgoing personality and great sense of humor John was a successful salesman with different electrical supply businesses in Wausau. However, the dream of a lifetime was realized when he and Jan moved to the Northwoods full time in the late '80s. Together they were owner/operators of The Josephine Haus and The Alice Haus, two assisted living facilities, prior to retirement. John and Jan's home always had an open door of generous hospitality caring for many in need and in a seeming instant would serve a full course meal to all who visited. John wants all to know he is more alive today than ever having realized Christ's promise for eternal life "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life (John 5:24)."
John was preceded in death by Janice, his wife of 61 years. John is survived by his daughters Carole Eldredge, Rhinelander; Mary (Sid) Thornton, Rhinelander and Christine (Brad) Hopkins, Casper,Wyo.; his beloved grandsons Tim (Annie) Thornton, Marrysville, Wash; Micah (Whitney) Thornton, Elgin, Ill., pride and joy great-grandson Krew Thornton, Elgin, Ill., (son of Micah) and his wonderful niece Diane O'Leary, Mosinee.
There is no funeral however a memorial service will be held in the future. The family would like to thank the staff of Rennes Healthcare and Rehab Rhinelander for the amazing care John received the last seven months. John quickly became the "popular boy" at Rennes with his two adored standard poodles as regular visitors. John and the family would love for any memorials to be sent to any of the following organizations he and Jan supported: fortwilderness.com, jesusdriven.org or wyomission.org/donate.
