The Rhinelander Basketball Association held a fourth-through-sixth-grade girls' basketball tournament at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium Saturday, Jan. 29.
The Hodags finished fourth in the sixth-grade division with a 2-1 record. Rhinelander narrowly lost to Antigo, 21-19, to start the day, before defeating Rice Lake (25-22) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (29-24).
Rhinelander fielded two teams in the fourth-and-fifth-grade division. Rhinelander White finished second on the day with a 2-1 record. The team lost to Wausau West (28-26) before rebounding for wins over Wittenberg-Birnamwood (28-16) and Northland Pines (26-12). Rhinelander Black went 0-3 with losses to Wittenberg Birnamwood (22-15), Northland Pines (21-16) and Wausau West (24-10).
Middle school Nordic at Badger State
The Rhinelander Middle School Nordic ski team took part in the Badger State Games held at Nine Mile Forest in Wausau Saturday, Jan. 29. Skiers had the choice of participating in a four-kilometer race in either the classic or freestyle technique.
Aaron Calhoun medaled for the Hodags, placing second in the boys' 9-11 age group, and 10th overall in the 4K freestyle race with a time of 12 minutes, 46.4 seconds. Douglas Hartman was ninth and Samuel Loomis finished 10th in the 9-11 group. Calvin Loomis was 12th (14:36.5) in the 4K freestyle race in the 12-13 age group while Jonathan Calhoun finished 13th.
Kayla Skubal (11th, 16:31.1), Mya Gillen (13th) and Kali Skubal (15th) all competed in the 12-13 age group in the girls' 4K classic race. Noelle Mayo was the lone girls' freestyle participant for the Hodags, taking 15th in the 9-11 age group (20:21.9).
