Lamers scores 39 in Lady Hodags' 77-36 rout of Eagles
Senior Ava Lamers scored 39 points as the Hodags roared to a 77-36 victory over the Eagles at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium.
Lamers had 32 points in the first half alone as it looked like she may threaten her own program single-game scoring record of 42 set in an overtime loss last month at Rice Lake. She missed a 3 that would have tied the mark before sitting the final 12-plus minutes of the second half with the outcome all but officially decided.
"I knew she had a lot. I probably should have checked, but I just knew the game was already in hand and I just do want to have her out there and have something freak happen and (she gets injured) in a meaningless game," Hodag girls' basketball coach Ryan Clark said. "Thirty-nine points, good for her. I thought she was very efficient. I don't think she forced anything. She was just attacking the basket, hit a couple of outside shots. I thought she had a really nice game."
Lamers finished the night 16 of 22 from the field, including 3 of 6 from beyond the arc. It was part of an overall efficient night for the Hodags, who shot 52.5% (32 of 61) from the field. Much of that was thanks to forcing 27 Northland Pines turnovers. The Hodags (4-3, 2-0 Great Northern) converted those into 38 points, had an 18-0 edge in transition points and outscored the Eagles in the paint, 50-12.
"I knew we could turn them over, get the ball up to Ava and Ava could just get to the rim," Clark said. "We won how we should have won tonight. 2-0 in the conference, but we've got some big games coming up."
The Hodags opened the game on a 24-5 run over the first eight minutes. The Eagles finally found some success on the other end against Rhinelander's press, getting the lead down to 16 at one point before Rhinelander finished on a 17-5 run to take a 49-21 lead to the break.
On top of the turnovers, Pines shot only 25% (12 of 48) in the game, and went just over 10 minutes without a field goal between the first and second halves. Rhinelander started the second on a 17-2 run and led 71-29 with nine minutes to play, triggering the running-clock rule with a lead of 40 or more points.
Lily Treder finished with 11 points for Rhinelander, including 10 in the first half. Sophomore Dawsyn Barkus had a career-high eight points off the bench for the Hodags. Tori Riopel and Kelsey Winter each finished with six points.
"Lily Treder was attacking the basket right off the bat, I thought that was nice to see," Clark said. "We were pretty inconsistent on our 3-point shots. We've got to work on that a little bit. Dawsyn Barkus came in and knocked down some shots. Tori got some baskets. I thought they played a nice, clean game overall."
Aubrey Beyer had eight points and eight rebounds to lead the Eagles (1-5, 1-2 Great Northern).
After playing six games in 13 days to open the season, the Hodags had a week and a half without a game following a 68-41 home win over Tomahawk. Clark said his team spent that time adding some traps and pressures on defense and a few more set plays within its dribble-drive offense.
Next up, Rhinelander hosts Shawano tonight in a non-conference game with potential sectional seeding implications. Tip-off is at 5:45, kicking off a girls-boys doubleheader against the Hawks.
"Shawano played us tough last year. I know we turned them over a lot, but they were pretty young at the guard position," Clark said. They lost to West De Pere by 25 or so, but West De Pere's a very good basketball team and held them to 22-11 at half. I think Shawano will be a tough matchup for us. That should be a good game, and it's a doubleheader, which will be fun too."
