Twice late last week, the Rhinelander High School wresting team took a small contingent to Crandon.

The Hodags wrestled only six athletes on varsity Thursday night as they went 0-3 in a quadrangular meet hosted by Crandon. Rhinelander then brought only five wrestlers Saturday at thy took 15th out of 18th teams in the Rebel Invite hosted by Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes at the Forest County Potawatomi Community Center in Crandon.

With eight forfeits, Rhinelander went into all three of its duals on Thursday with no mathematical chance of winning. The Hodags ended up taking only two contested bouts on the night as they fell to Peshtigo 81-0, Marathon 64-12 and Crandon 66-12.

"The first dual, I wasn't impressed. We just didn't come out ready to wrestle," RHS wrestling coach Scottie Arneson said afterward. "I got on the guys, got them fired up a little bit and the fight was better the second and the third dual. Marathon and Brandon are both going to be ranked in Division 3 this year. They're better teams than we are right now."

Joey Evenson picked up the Hodags' lone contested win against Marathon. He stopped Mason Putnum at the 3:13 mark of the 182-pound bout after the two wrestlers traded reversals early in the second period.

"Joey, today was his best day competing, I think. He was right in his first match," Arneson said. "He was in there in his second match, grinding away and ended up with a pin. Even in that third match, there was moments where I thought maybe he was going to sneak out a win in that match as well. I'm very pumped for him."

Kyle Wiese picked up a forfeit win against Marathon when his scheduled opponent at 132 missed weight by less than a pound. The two wrestled an exhibition bout instead, with Wiese recording a pin at the 3:37 mark.

Sean Boman overcame a slow start against Crandon's Ty Dennee to earn a late first-period pin in a 138-pound match. Boman recovered from an early 5-0 hole where he had to fight off his back. He reversed Dennee and scored the pin with 20 seconds remaining in the opening period.

"Sean, he's going out there giving it his all," Arneson said. "He gets frustrated when he loses, which is a good thing, but you've got to let go of the losses and take the wins when we can. He's a spark. When he's excited, most of the guys are excited. We've just have to feed off one another."

Rhinelander saw only two matches go the full six minutes on Thursday night. Logan Schwinger dropped an 8-3 decision to Peshtigo's Lincoln Nemec at 170. Aiden Ostermann lost by major decision to Marathon's Len Kratukramer, 14-4, at 126.

Ostermann went 0-3 on Thursday but bounced back with a solid day on Saturday. He won two of his three matches to place fifth at 126 in the Rebel Invite. Crandon's Brayden Madl beat Ostermann again Saturday, but this time in a 7-0 decision rather than a pin, in the quarterfinals. From there, Ostermann pinned Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes's Hayden Demerath and earned a 9-1 major decision over Gladstone, Michigan's Conner Britton to earn fifth in his bracket.

Boman also scored a fifth-place finish for Rhinelander at 132. He went 4-1 on the day with four pins. He lost to eventual runner-up Elias Glinski of Crandon in the quarterfinals, but earned first-period stops over Ethyn Sebo of Reedsville, Brady Shepard of Laona/Wabeno/Three Lakes and Elliot Corrigan of Bark River to make his way through the consolation bracket.

"They battled back and after they lost they saw who they were going to be wrestling and I thought we could put together some pretty good matches," Arneson said. "Both of them dug deep and I think they're both feeling pretty good about how they competed."

Schwinger was Rhinelander's other placewinnner on Saturday, finishing sixth at 170. He went 3-2 on the day with three pins.

"Logan placing sixth today, he was in a couple of meat grinders," Arneson said. "I thought we would sneak out maybe one more win today, that fifth-place match but, at the end of the day, he's competing way harder than we've seen in the past, which is always a positive thing."

Dresden Klaver (138) and Evenson (182) lost both of their matches on Saturday to finish outside the top six in their weight classes.

The Hodag split up late this week for a trio of meets. The majority of the boys' team will head to Amherst on Friday for a multi-dual meet while a few JV wrestlers will take part in an invite on Saturday in Stratford. The Hodag girls' team will take part in an invite at Shawano this coming Saturday.
