A bond modification hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning in the case of the 18-year-old Woodruff man accused of making terrorist threats toward two local school officials earlier this year. Public defender Breanna Magallones filed a motion for bond adjustment Aug. 16 on behalf of Adam Bauman. She has also filed a demand for a speedy trial in the case.

Bauman was last in court on July 11 at which time he entered a not guilty plea to one count of "making terrorist threats".

The Class I felony carries a maximum sentence of 3 1/2 years in prison upon conviction.

According to a criminal complaint filed June 10, Bauman is accused of creating "an unreasonable and substantial risk of causing public panic or fear" and threatening to cause the death of, or inflict bodily harm, to a pair of Oneida County school officials.

A police investigation began in early June after a woman alerted Lakeland Union High School officials that she had observed a picture of an assault rifle on a message Bauman allegedly sent to her child, the complaint states.

It was also noted in the complaint that Bauman was expelled from high school in 2019 following an incident where he "went down the hallways and pretended to shoot into classrooms."

Following his arrest, Bauman admitted to investigators that he purchased firearms and ammunition in Rhinelander on June 7.

"Investigators were provided with a receipt indicating Adam Bauman purchased a semi-automatic rifle as well as a drum magazine that holds approximately 60 rounds," the complaint states. "Adam also purchased ammunition for the rifle and a shotgun. Adam paid cash for these purchases."

Bauman told investigators the weapons were for coyote hunting and "home defense," the complaint states.

In analyzing a cellphone belong to Bauman, investigators also found messages where Bauman allegedly told others he was "researching Columbine" (referring to the 1999 mass shooting at a Colorado high school that killed 15 people) as well as a conversation he had with a friend regarding the May 14 mass shooting in a Buffalo, N.Y. grocery store, the complaint said.

Classes and activities in two school districts were canceled as a result of the alleged threat.

Bond was originally set at $50,000 cash, and online court records do not indicate any adjustment, however the defense motion states the bond amount is $10,000 cash.

According to the motion, Bauman's family can post some cash bail but not the full amount. He has supportive family in the area with whom he can reside and who could ensure his appearance at future court hearings, the motion reads.

"Since bond was set, defense counsel has received discovery, which brings doubt into the strength of the state's case," Magallones added.

The motion does not describe the discovery material Magallones referenced.

During his initial appearance on June 10, Bauman characterized the situation as a "big misunderstanding."

"I mean, I've gone through this before," he said. "I don't have any intentions to do such a horrible thing. There's some pretty bad stuff that I say that should never see the light of day, but I would never act on it ever."

If he posts bond, Bauman may not communicate with any school employee in Oneida County or go on any school premises in the county. He is also prohibited from possessing firearms as well as any device that can be used to connect to the internet and may not leave the county without permission.
