Athletic Booster Club holds successful golf scramble
After having to cancel in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and a lower than usual turnout last year, the ABC moved its event to Northwood, the date to a Friday and filled all of its openings in advance the week of the tournament. In all, 27 teams of four were on the course of its biggest fundraiser of the season.
"To end up with 27 teams ultimately it just amazing," ABC board president Brandon Karaba said. "It's a huge complement to the community and how many people support the Athletic Booster Club and what we stand for."
According to Karaba, the preliminary total of the money raised from various revenue streams - title sponsorship from Rhinelander GM and Aspirus, hole sponsorships, raffle items, gambling holes and the putting contest - was roughly $17,500. That money, in turn, will go back to Rhinelander High School and youth sports programs through grants.
"Between the title sponsors with Aspirus and Rhinelander GM, right out of the gates we're making money rain or shine," Karaba said. "Huge shoutout the them, our hole sponsors. Take home will far exceed what we made last year. I'm looking forward to being able to make some large donations down the road if everything goes according to plan.
"For Rhinelander athletics, it's a huge win for them. Everything goes back to them and we're looking forward to another year of being able to give that money out."
The team of Stefanie Edwards, Cherie LaHam, Teresa Cleary and Jerry Cleary won the event, shooting a 12-under-par round of 60 in the four-person scramble. They beat out the team of Dave Mannikko, Ben Quade, Jesse Richter and Chip Bromann by a stroke.
Karaba said the ABC is already making plans for next year's scramble, which will once again be held the first Friday in August - Aug. 4.
"A big thank you to (PGA professional) Kyle (Christian), his staff and Northwood. They did amazing," Karaba said. "A lot of great feedback, because of that, we're looking forward to another great time. Overall, it's just amazing and a huge thank you to everyone."
