Rhinelander High School students Noelle St. Pierre, Laela Sizemore and Aubrey Younker recently enjoyed an epic learning opportunity - a visit to Spain from March 11-18.

The trip, which included visits to Madrid, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Pamplona, Zaragoza and Barcelona, was endorsed by the Spanish Club of Rhinelander High School, according to a School District of Rhinelander press release.

The students appreciated that they were finally able to go on this trip after all the delays and unsure times; they planned for the past two years, the release notes.

"The students fell in love with the architecture and the history while learning about the culture of each region of Spain," the release states, noting that the Rhinelander students traveled with a group from Tennessee and Florida and got the chance to explore cities with and without the other groups.

"Exciting tours of the Prado Museum made the paintings from their art unit in class come to life when they saw the real pieces from multiple artists," the release states. "Some of their other favorite parts included seeing 'La Sagrada Familia,' an unfinished cathedral in Barcelona that is continuing to be anonymously funded. They also learned about Jai Alai, the fast-paced ball game (Basque Pelota) in San Sebastián. There, the recent world champions taught and played with the students. Additionally, they paid a short visit to the Atlantic Ocean in this Paris-like city. They visited multiple other cathedrals including the birthplace of Christianity in Zaragoza, and a cathedral in Pamplona, as well as walking the route for the Running of the Bulls that takes place during the San Fermin festival. Walking inside and around many of the massive structures of the Guggenheim museum was an experience of large proportions. The students enjoyed trying the cuisine of the country starting with pinchos and tapas: exotic varieties of seafood, vegetables, pasties and tarts, cheese, ham, over bread, and the famous ham from the Iberian Peninsula, ending with paella: the traditional rice combined with spaces and different types of meat, after enjoying a Flamenco dance to the rhythm of Spanish guitar. Much more was also seen and tried at the local regional markets. They got a taste of speaking Spanish with locals in plazas, restaurants, and at park Guell, where mosaic covert chairs and gingerbread-like houses lively decorate the surroundings without interrupting nature."

In addition to encountering the difficulty of navigating large international airports, the group tried many forms of transportation throughout their travel including the subway, airplanes, tour bus, and funicular: a unique electric train that climbs up the mountain.

According to Senora Mara Krueger, the Spain trip leader, the students were appreciative of this opportunity and very engaged. Krueger enjoyed the many laughs they had, the sharing of their own discoveries, and most of all their outstanding behavior. They were great representatives of our school and Hodag values: they were true Hodags exploring the world, she said. The students said the once-in-a-lifetime experience was "Epico."

The students and Mrs. Krueger would like to extend their thanks to our amazing community, teachers and administrators who supported the Spanish Club through their fundraising events and made the success of this trip possible. Seeing the students comparing and contrasting the cultures and making vivid memories as true global citizens is what keeps Senora Mara excited, the release states. New students are already enrolling for a new adventure in Costa Rica in 2024.
