High School Competition Day allows students to explore careers, 'make discoveries'
The annual High School Competition Day event is an opportunity for students to explore various potential careers, learn more about Nicolet and square off against their peers in 10 different areas of academic interest: Automotive, Business Jeopardy, Beauty Behind the Madness (cosmetology), Crime Scene Investigation, Cupcake Challenge (baking/decorating), Robot Pickup and Place, Health Occupations/Mind & Body Challenge, Public Safety Challenge, Still Life Drawing and Welding.
After a full morning of competition, the students gathered at the Lakeside Center for lunch and an awards ceremony.
Nicolet president Kate Ferrel gave a short speech welcoming the competitors to the college, encouraging them to "explore the many ways we can serve you."
"Obviously, we're a college," Ferrel said. "So we're all about learning and we're all about helping people grow. So we really hope that by participating in competition day, you learned a little bit more about teamwork and collaboration, and that you honed your ability to problem solve just a little bit better."
She said the goal is for the students "to makes some discoveries."
"You discovered some things, some talents you didn't even know that you had," Ferrel said.
The competition is also a chance to improve mental toughness, something employers look for in job applicants, she added.
"There's nothing like competition to develop some mental toughness," Ferrel said. "As you proceed in this world - whatever your journey might be - mental toughness is really going to be a great quality."
She also hoped the students had gained a boast in self-confidence by taking part in the competition.
"Competition, while it has its snags, for the most part is a really good thing," Ferrel said. "So, regardless of your personal takeaway from what today might of held for you, you won by simply being here. Simply by showing up, it shows that you're up for a challenge. Never run away from a challenge. By all means, run right over them, stamp them out. You got this."
In addition to Rhinelander High School, students from the following high schools also took part in the event: Crandon, Elcho, Goodman-Armstrong Creek, Lakeland Union, Laona, Mercer, Northland Pines, Phelps, Three Lakes, Tomahawk, and Wabeno.
A team of students from Rhinelander High School, with help from a student from Lakeland Union High School, took home first place in the Business Jeopardy competition. In that event students put their accounting, business management, marketing, interviewing, and Microsoft Office skills to the test. The winning team members were William Rutkowski, Samual Rutkowski, Kayley Huss of Lakeland Union High School, Koldyn Gechas, Colton Leman, and Hunter St. Louis.
