The Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport has resolved a long-standing concern of travelers using the airport's long-term parking. A new, more user-friendly payment system is now in use.

The system has been on the airport administration's wish list for awhile, airport director Matt Leitner told the River News last spring

"That's kind of our first wave of capital improvement projects that are, in part, going to be covered by airport general funds and in part covered by CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act) grant funds," Leitner said.

Now the airport parking lots, including the administrative parking next to the terminal, are controlled by gates and attractive fencing has been installed around the perimeter to give the whole terminal area a visual facelift.

A technician from Hub Parking was on the airport grounds installing finishing touches last Thursday, March 31, but otherwise the system is online.

Short-term parking under four hours is free, with everything after that billed at $7 a day.

The new payment system replaces the yellow envelopes people had to use to send their payments to the airport after the fact. Now people can pay at an exit with a credit or debit card.

"It's in place, two entry gates and two exit gates," Leitner said. "And we have a kiosk here in the terminal if they wish to pay cash. They can also use a credit card at the terminal."

He said the airport is currently waiting for news on several grant application for other projects that have been waiting their turn at funding. Soon the airport will be competing with other construction projects for labor and material, which will drive up the cost of any work, he noted.

On the positive side, passenger traffic continues to remain steady on both inbound and outbound flights.

"We won't get the numbers until next week, but our spring break season was amazing," Leitner said.

He also hopes to hear soon if the third flight to Minneapolis/St. Paul and/or the round-trip service to Chicago's O'Hare International airport will return this summer.
