Hodag Farmers' Market Report: Sample the bounty of the Northwoods
By Cassie Shefchik-
Labor Day has never been the last day of our farmers' market because how much more produce there is still left to be harvested. Anyone who has a small vegetable garden knows there are still plenty of plants producing throughout September as well as October. This is the very reason why this market ends in mid-October.
Vegetable stalls are piled high with corn, potatoes, tomatoes, summer squash, winter squash, peppers, cucumbers, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. Mushrooms, domestic and wild, are still being harvested. Honey and some maple syrup are still being sold at the market. The bounty of the season has home canners working overtime turning their produce into yummy varieties of pickles, relishes, jams, jelly, apple butter, sauerkraut and more.
Crafters are still keeping pace with wooden garden items, soaps, soy candles, cutting boards, shopping bags, birch baskets, fabric baskets, rock critters.
The bake sale this week will be hosted by St. Augustine and they have promised a nice assortment of baked goods as well as a variety of homemade frozen soup made with produce purchased from the Hodag Farmers' Market, like minestrone and carrot to name a few. To me, the frozen soup is a genius idea. Homemade soup is always better than what is found on a store shelf and to have someone else make it is even better. My first thought about this concept is what a great way to impress others at a family meal, whether it's the in-laws, out-of-town guests, neighbors, just your immediate family (suffice to say, your secret is safe with me) or for a quick lunch.
The Hodag Farmers' Market will be set up in the always lovely Pioneer Park this Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Come by and pick up enough for the week or more for your own extra produce preservation.
