To us, Dad was the hardest worker in the world. He started a paper route at age 8 and delivered papers before school. When he saved enough money, he bought a bike, so he could get a second route.
Dad was a die-hard Cubs fan almost from birth. At age 11, he and a buddy hitchhiked from Rhinelander to Wrigley Field for a Cubs game, caught a foul ball, had it signed by the whole team, and then hitchhiked back home.
When dad was 17 years old, he joined the Marine Corps, and was stationed at 29 Palms in California. When on leave, he hitchhiked home to Rhinelander and back to California twice because most of his pay was sent back home to support his family. He had so many stories about Route 66 and the people who picked him up.
After he returned home for good, he married the love of his life, Georgette Hurley, and started a family. Shortly after that, he opened up Huebner's Standard Service on Lincoln Street. Over the 45 years he had the business he practically worked day and night and weekends. He loved to reminisce about all the kids that worked for him over the years, and told fond stories about his customers.
Dad was an excellent ball player and played Fast Pitch Baseball for the Mint Bar and Moritz Tire. Dad and Johnny Nixon were the dynamic duo double play sensation! Dad was shortstop and Johnny was 2nd base. Pioneer Park was the place to be on weekends and it seemed like the whole town was there watching good baseball. A few years ago, Dad was inducted into the Fast Pitch Hall of Fame and it meant a lot to him. He was highly involved in coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and All Star teams.
Dad was an outdoors person and enjoyed summers camping at Clear Lake Campground, hunting and loved fishing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends, right up to his last day.
Our family would like to thank the Beck Cancer Center for helping our Dad and the kindness they showed him. Compassus Home Hospice helped in so many ways and we could not have done it without their guidance and support. Dad wanted us to mention that the care Dr. Swank and Nurse Ruby gave him was greatly appreciated and that he considered them good friends.
A day will not go by where we will not think of our dad. We will miss spending time hanging out with him.
Denny is survived by his wife Georgette (Hurley), his children Kim (David) Chappel, Denise (Robert) Brandenburg, Richard Huebner, John (Kim) Huebner and Chad Huebner, his 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his brother Roger (Margaret) Huebner, Scott Stefan (who was like another son), other family and many friends.
A visitation for Denny will be held on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Newbold Memorial Cemetery. A memorial is being established in Denny's name and any gifts may be forwarded to his family. You may leave your private condolences for the Huebner family at www.carlsonfh.com.
