Last Hodag Farmers' Market of the year to be held Saturday
By Cassie Shefchik-
Saturday looks to be a lovely fall day. Many years there has been cold and snow making it a less than stellar market. It will be a good day for the last market of the season.
News reports state there were less pumpkins harvested this year due to less than ideal growing conditions. However, the Hodag Farmers' Market has pumpkins! All kinds of locally grown pumpkins in different shapes and sizes. There's also pumpkins that didn't start out as pumpkin plants but began life as a tree. One of the vendors has put their chainsaw skills to work and made beautiful pumpkins in several sizes. The wooden ones are considered a sustainable craft because the trees used were toppled due to bad weather. Another vendor has cute, soft sculpture pumpkins that are hand-knitted.
Naturally you'll also be able to shop for other fresh produce at the market: brussel sprouts, cucumbers, other winter squash, summer squash, mushrooms, herbs, salad sprouts, beets, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot), carrots, kale, apples, and many more.
There will also be perennial plants which can be planted this time of year. As a matter of fact, some say it's less stressful on the plant when planted in the fall.
There will also be canned goods: jams, jellies, apple butter, sauerkraut, pickles, salsa, etc.
The last Hodag Farmers' Market of the year will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday at Rhinelander's Pioneer Park.
